Our student community consists of over 6,000 elementary, middle, and high school students in East Palo Alto, Oakland, San Francisco, San Lorenzo, San Jose, Redwood City, and Stockton. Our student community demographics are: 94% identify as students of color, 79% qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 23% are English language learners, and 10% receive special education services. We strive to cultivate a representative team of teachers and leaders that reflect our students' diversity.

Our schools are looking for talented and committed English Language Arts Teachers to play a key role in the establishment of curriculum and culture as they develop a high quality education program from the stages of vision to execution.

Our students deserve continuously strong teaching from the time they enter kindergarten until they graduate from college or begin a career. As such, our English Language Arts Teachers will work closely with each school's leadership team to ensure our students learn, grow, and achieve transformative life outcomes. Each English Language Arts Teacher will be responsible for ensuring that our students have the opportunity to learn in an environment of joyful, excellent, and equitable teaching.

Above all else, the most effective English Language Arts Teacher will find joy and purpose in teaching children the habits necessary to be successful in school, and they will relish the opportunity to cultivate our students with a love for learning. They must also be committed to KIPP Public Schools Northern California's mission, while possessing the beliefs, character traits, and skills necessary to ensure student growth and achievement.

English Language Arts Teachers are expected to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a TK-12 learning environment, both in an in-person classroom setting and virtually, that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic and socio-emotional potential. Work is performed under the supervision of the principal or direct manager.

The Opportunity:

In joining Mastery as an English Teacher you will work with your students to foster their development in critical thinking, questioning, critiquing, and understanding the written word. It is well-documented that the opportunity gap in the United States is a literacy gap and by taking on the mantle of an English Teacher you will work daily to set our students up for long-term success and ensure they get a world-class education.

As an English Language Arts teacher we know you love reading intrinsically and have unwavering belief in holding the bar high for all readers. Ideally, you have familiarity with balanced literacy instruction and you are eager to teach the building blocks of strong reading practices. In 6th grade, you and your students engage with Text Study broken into thematic units while learning to comprehend and analyze complex grade-level texts as required by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

Starting in 7th Grade and continuing through 12th Grade our students engage in thematic units while learning to comprehend and analyze complex grade-level texts as required by the Common Core State Standards. Students read, analyze, and write about nonfiction, literature, and poetic texts. Your passion for literature and language arts will spur your students to discover their own voices, better understand their world, and interpret and process the feelings and experiences they live.

At Mastery we value Continuous Improvement and want you to learn and grow in your craft. We utilize a team of Assistant Principals, central-office coaches, and school-based content teams to provide every teacher coaching and feedback. We have professional development or peer collaboration time built into our calendar every Wednesday (when students are dismissed early). You will receive more than 250 hours of professional development annually and have a professional development allowance to use to further your growth.

1. Bachelor’s degree in education or English Language Arts related field of study with a minimum grade point average of 2.50 overall.
2. Strong writing skills, well-informed of youth/ young adult literature, and a strong command of the English language.
3. Experience working with school-aged children in an academic or youth development setting.
4. Experienced teachers must show a proven track record of achievement in the classroom.

Compensation and Benefits

1. Super competitive salary that is based on performance driving student outcomes. Starting salary for new teachers begins at $70,000.
2. Performance bonuses ($7500 – $15,000) for high performing teachers who meet or exceed instructional goals.

Teacher Support and Development

1. Weekly one on one coaching that includes classroom observations and instructional meetings.
2. Weekly school-wide professional development where you learn from the instructional leadership team and your colleagues.
3. Summer Professional Development Institute.
4. New & Emerging Teacher Training.

Teacher Performance Outcomes

1. At minimum, 75% of all students will reach proficiency (score of 65% or higher) in English Language Arts as measured by internal interim assessments.
2. At minimum, 33% of all students will exceed proficiency (score of 85% or higher) in English Language Arts as measured by internal assessments.
3. At minimum, 75% of students will write at or above grade level as measured by internal writing performance tasks.
4. Teacher will score proficient in classroom management and youth development as measured by student referral numbers, suspensions, and internal measurement tools.
