Environmental Assistant Careers

If you are keen to help mitigate environmental pollution and make a difference on Earth, start your career as an environmental assistant. Under the supervision of an environmental scientist, you will learn to identify and eliminate various factors that pollute the earth's environment as you assist scientists with their everyday job tasks.

Your role will include data collection, sample analysis, and report writing that you conduct alongside and in relationship to the environmental scientist's research. Based off of the results, you will help the scientist to recommend new techniques that help the environment flourish. Moreover, you will accompany the environmental scientist to conduct fieldwork, perform program research, and present recommendations to the public and other entities regarding environment pollution and how to curb the problem. Essential skills required for this position are communication, analytical, self-discipline, and flexibility.

To qualify for this position, you will need a bachelor's degree in environmental science or a similar discipline. Moreover, certain certifications provided by institutions such as OSHA are also given preference. The average hourly pay for this position is $13.09, which amounts to more than $27,000 annually.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being an environmental assistant. For example, did you know that they make an average of $14.14 an hour? That's $29,409 a year!

Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow 9% and produce 3,200 job opportunities across the U.S.

What Does an Environmental Assistant Do

There are certain skills that many environmental assistants have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. By taking a look through resumes, we were able to narrow down the most common skills for a person in this position. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed analytical skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills.

When it comes to the most important skills required to be an environmental assistant, we found that a lot of resumes listed 35.6% of environmental assistants included procedures, while 14.6% of resumes included patient rooms, and 6.6% of resumes included emergency. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

When it comes to searching for a job, many search for a key term or phrase. Instead, it might be more helpful to search by industry, as you might be missing jobs that you never thought about in industries that you didn't even think offered positions related to the environmental assistant job title. But what industry to start with? Most environmental assistants actually find jobs in the health care and energy industries.

How To Become an Environmental Assistant

If you're interested in becoming an environmental assistant, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 40.8% of environmental assistants have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 3.4% of environmental assistants have master's degrees. Even though some environmental assistants have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become an environmental assistant. When we researched the most common majors for an environmental assistant, we found that they most commonly earn bachelor's degree degrees or high school diploma degrees. Other degrees that we often see on environmental assistant resumes include associate degree degrees or diploma degrees.

You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become an environmental assistant. In fact, many environmental assistant jobs require experience in a role such as internship. Meanwhile, many environmental assistants also have previous career experience in roles such as cashier or sales associate.

Best States For an Environmental Assistant

Some places are better than others when it comes to starting a career as an environmental assistant. The best states for people in this position are Alaska, California, Nevada, and North Dakota. Environmental assistants make the most in Alaska with an average salary of $47,301. Whereas in California and Nevada, they would average $45,591 and $43,466, respectively. While environmental assistants would only make an average of $39,405 in North Dakota, you would still make more there than in the rest of the country. We determined these as the best states based on job availability and pay. By finding the median salary, cost of living, and using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Location Quotient, we narrowed down our list of states to these four.
