McGinley & Associates (McGinley), a Universal Engineering Sciences Company (UES) is looking for a dynamic and experienced individual for our Environmental Department in our Reno, NV office. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

McGinley & Associates is looking for a full-time Environmental Planner. We are looking for a motivated individual to join our environmental practice in support of various Environmental permitting projects.

As an Environmental Planner, you will provide assistance across a variety of projects for a diverse range of industries and clients, to include federal, state, and local projects. This could include assistance with the preparation of NEPA (CatX, EA, and as needed EIS) documents (and/or California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as needed); Special Use Permits at the County level; Notice of Intents; BLM Exploration, and Mining Plans of Operation (43 CFR 3809); and permits in accordance with USFS regulations (36 CFR Part 228). Our NEPA work is primarily focused on public lands in the Great Basin region.

As an Environmental Planner, you will have basic skills and be eager to learn a variety of environmental regulatory processes. Primary duties will focus on collaborating with the senior staff and other team members on research, technical report writing, and QA/QC review of analytical sections of environmental documents.

Job Responsibilities: Conduct impact analyses on a variety of environmental resources and work to ensure the success of the team.Assist in data collection, data review, and writing sections for NEPA and/or CEQA documents.Support field work, when necessary.Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor of Sciences (BS) in environmental science, environmental policy, environmental planning, or related field, and 3-5 years of related experience.OR Master of Sciences (MS) in environmental sciences/Natural Resource Management policy field or related and 2+ years of relevant experience.2+ years of experience, preferably in environmental consulting, or working for a federal/state environmental agency and/or 2+ years of experience working with environmental permitting projects relating to the NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Sec. 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, etc.Demonstrated experience and or familiarity with various environmental regulatory policy.Experience with task leadership.Good communication skills and ability to work with others.

Preferred Qualifications: Understanding of the NEPA process.Experience managing environmental projects a plus (scope, schedule, and budget.) Possess demonstrable technical writing experience.Technical writing tasks to prepare and summarize various natural resource sections of NEPA documents (Land-Use, Socioeconomics, Environmental Justice, etc.) Ability to work independently productively, and collaboratively in a fast-paced work environment with multiple deadlines.Be self-motivated, efficient, and organized.A working knowledge of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).A working knowledge of and experience with mapping software (ArcGIS) is a plus.Excellent ability to facilitate decision making and issue resolution processes is a plus.

The Environmental Planner position involves research and preparation of environmental documents in compliance with CEQA and/or NEPA, working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. In addition, the position may support HELIX's noise, air quality/greenhouse gas, and other specialists in conducting field work and in the preparation of technical studies. On the job training will be provided.


The Environmental Planner position is best suited for a candidate with a positive attitude and strong research, writing, mathematical/scientific, analytical, and verbal communication skills. Writing comprises a major part of the responsibilities of the position. This individual must have the ability to coordinate effectively with multiple project managers and prioritize and complete high-quality work within specified deadlines. Attention to detail, including strong spelling, proofreading, and organizational skills, is required. The applicant must have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and experience working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. A test of practical skills will be required of final candidates.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements for the Environmental Planner:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in environmental studies, environmental science, geography, natural science, environmental engineering, public planning, or a related field.
  • At least two years of related professional work experience in the research and writing of CEQA and/or NEPA documents, such as EIRs, EISs, Initial Studies, Environmental Assessments, and CEs, project descriptions, project alternatives, or supporting technical studies/analyses of aesthetics/visual, agriculture, air quality, greenhouse gas, energy, geology and soils, hydrology and water quality, land use and planning, or cumulative impacts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Strong research, mathematical/scientific and analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to commute to, and work from, our Folsom office an average of at least three days per week (and up to five days per week if that is your preference). If choosing to work a day or two remotely, you will be responsible for your home office and need to maintain high-speed internet service capable of supporting video conference calls and handling large documents.
