PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state agency, college or university this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the protection, safety and security of individuals and property with full police powers and responsibility for law enforcement. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The PoliceOfficer may perform a combination or concentration of the following functions on a fixed or rotating basis as directed by the agency:
SECURITY:
Provides crowd control at various events and activities;
Monitors designated areas to ensure physical security and authorized access in order to prevent theft, trespass, vandalism or violation of state statutes or regulations;
Gives directions and routine information to the public;
Participates in evacuation activities in event of fire, bomb threats or other potential disasters;
Operates firefighting apparatus if needed;
May conduct cruiser or foot patrols;
May conduct bicycle patrols as weather permits.
PROTECTION:
Provides traffic and/or crowd control;
Assesses nature of further assistance needed and makes timely and appropriate arrangements;

Vacancies are in the Police Department. Under supervision, performs law enforcement duties involving the protection of life and property, the prevention of crime and the apprehension of crime suspects. Performs public service duties involving non-criminal calls for service, the preservation of peace and working with the community. Works 40 hours per week on a shift rotation schedule involving weekends and holidays. Performs related work as required.
This is a Hartford Police Union position.
NOTE: PoliceOfficers with proof of higher education that meet established criteria shall receive Educational Incentive pay upon completion of their probationary period. Salary and benefits are subject to collective bargaining.
The examination will consist of the rating of an oral test. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. To be appointed, candidates must also pass a drug test, a background investigation which includes a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, an interview with the Chief of Police, a physical examination, and a working test/probationary period of one year after graduation from the Police Academy. All parts of the examination are designed to determine the ability of applicants to learn and perform the duties of a PoliceOfficer in a multi-culturally diverse environment. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, municipal laws, rules and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:

· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
