S&ME is seeking an individual to join our team on various projects with our client, Southern Company, as an Environmental Technician, and help us provide them with engineering solutions. You will report to Southern Company's Logan Martin Dam office in Vincent, Alabama, for weekly scheduled projects and locations. Extensive travel is required. You will typically travel directly to each site from your home. Project sites will be located in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Travel expenses will be covered by Southern Company.
As an Environmental Technician, you will serve as a supplemental or vendor services worker to the CFS, Drilling Services organization in support of various environmental/geotechnical drilling and the maintenance and installation of instrumentation linked to groundwater and surface water monitoring. Installation and management of real-time instrumentation (e.g., In-Situ Trolls, piezometers, inclinometers, groundwater, and surface water monitoring instruments) and other monitoring technologies for CCR, dams, levees, slopes, construction sites, and the oversight of contractors as needed.
What You Bring:
* An Associate's degree in Environmental Biology, Physical Science, or a closely related field
* Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
* Proficiency in field investigations, drilling methods, soil/rock logging, and environmental sampling/testing, adhering to regulatory requirements, and managing budgets
* Experience with the gINT Boring Log Program, interpreting wiring diagrams, and working independently
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:
* Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
* Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
* Ability to work and maneuver equipment, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
* Traveling out of town overnight and working outside of normal business hours when necessary.

Duties:
Project Management:
Manage multiple ongoing and short-duration environmental projects simultaneously
Prepare and track project budgets to ensure deliverables are completed on time and within budget
Develop proposals, assessment work plans, clean-up work plans, and comprehensive reports
Manage and evaluate field and laboratory data for accuracy and completeness
Maintain open communication with project team members to ensure seamless project execution
Field Operations:
Perform and/or supervise field activities and drilling operations on environmental projects
Conduct groundwater and soil sampling throughout Alabama
Supervise contractors and drilling crews as needed
Operate field equipment including photo-ionization detectors (PID), pumps, and meters
Technical Deliverables:
Prepare technical reports, data presentations, and maps using GIS software
Ensure all work is conducted to professional standards and follows the firm's QA/QC policy
Create clear, accurate documentation for clients and regulatory agencies
Client and Regulatory Relations:
Communicate effectively with clients, local regulators, and state environmental agencies
Represent the company in a professional manner aligned with the firm's core values
Provide excellent client service with a positive, solution-oriented attitude
Requirements
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field (preferred)
5-10 years of experience in a related environmental consulting position, preferably with local/regional project experience
40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification (preferred but not required)
