The Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) has about 100 staff that focuses on identifying and minimizing the risks of environmental and engineered hazards in NYC from water systems in the natural and built environments and radiation control. ESE has broad oversight of a variety of systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, building premise plumbing, the NYC drinking water supply treatment and distribution, recreational water facilities (beaches, pools and spas), nonpotable and water reuse systems, sanitary sewage, radioactive materials, and x-ray and radiological equipment.
The Office of Public Health Engineering is seeking to hire an Environmental Analyst. The position will report to the water systems analyst and will work with a team of scientists, engineers, and data analysts supporting drinking water and recreational water programs in NYC. Primary tasks will include water quality surveillance and inspection (sanitary survey) of the NYC drinking water supply system, review of engineering plans and specifications of drinking water system treatment facilities and bathing establishments (swimming pools, spa pools, wading pools, saunas, steam rooms, and spray grounds), and beach water quality sampling and surveillance.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- Provide scientific research and literature review of proposed water quality standards and regulations, emergency preparedness and disease response, new water treatment technologies, analytical methods, surveillance tools, protocols, data systems and/or processes related to PHE programs.
- Assist in the regulatory water quality surveillance of the New York City drinking water supply program including collection of water quality samples and sampling and operational data analysis and compliance review.
- Assist in inspection of drinking water facilities (sanitary survey) to verify source water, water treatment, storage, and distribution operations in accordance with the approved plans and for compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations and contribute to reports on inspection findings.
- Review engineering plans and provide written comments for water treatment and monitoring systems and bathing establishment submissions by outside agencies and/or engineers/architects for regulatory approval and permit construction and operation oversight for compliance with applicable Federal, State and Local regulations.
- Assist in testing and implementation of software-based data collection and reporting tools.
- Contribute to scientific reports and research as it relates to the program's compliance and surveillance activities, study findings, and regulatory review of the City's drinking and recreational water quality programs.
- Assist in development of technical guidance, informational factsheets, and recommendations, under supervision of higher-level research scientists, related to drinking water treatment technologies, emerging contaminants, and recreational water safety.

About you and this role:

In this role, you will primarily support remedial operations, maintenance, and monitoring (OMM) projects at client facilities and field sites. The candidate will ideally have experience in environmental remediation/sampling, operating various remediation systems

Operating various remediation systems, including:

Fieldwork & Sampling

Minimum Requirements:

Use power gripping/squeezing hand tools and levers to perform maintenance, inspection, or reading such as removing nuts and bolts on filters or well covers. Occasionally work with arms above shoulder level, climbing stairs, and using portable ladders to perform maintenance, inspection, or readings. Wear associated personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to, safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hat, face shield, and hearing protection.

Responsibilities
The position in the Engineering Services Department is an integral part of a fast-paced group working on development projects for new and existing material processing facilities. Engineering Services is an internal consulting arm to supports all aspects of Posillico facilities including obtaining town and environmental permits and ensuring all compliance aspects of these permits are performed and helping with the solid waste approval and management processes.
