Lizzette Rodriguez Ph.D.: In terms of finding work after graduation, my opinion is that it changes a lot. A few years ago I would have said that Texas was the place to go find work and we have several recent graduates that are in the oil industry. However, the oil industry has suffered a lot and some of our graduates have lost their jobs because of that. At the other hand, we also have graduates working in different offices of the USGS and the EPA, in different states, as well as FEMA.

Alberto Arenas Ph.D.: I don't believe the pandemic has accelerated or de-accelerated jobs in environmental fields. The pandemic should accelerate hiring in the field of public health, health, biochemistry, manufacturing of personal protective equipment, and other areas related to the containment and abatement of the COVID-19 virus. One caveat pertaining to an increase in environmental jobs relates to the zoonotic origin of the disease, that is, when the pathogen that causes an infectious disease migrates from a non-human animal to a human. This migration tends to occur when humans destroy wildlife and their habitat. So combatting this destruction becomes paramount. Previous experiences of this same phenomenon are HIV, Ebola and SARS. Assuming governments and other hiring institutions want to prevent the origin and spread of new zoonotic diseases, new jobs should be created in such areas as: sustainable forestry management; prevention of animal trafficking and poaching; alternative legal crops; wildlife conservation; marketing that changes consumers' attitudes and behaviors towards not purchasing endangered wildlife.
Now, trends towards an increase in environmental jobs started pre-pandemic and will continue strong in years to come. This should become evident under the Biden administration that will have a more reasonable and responsible set of policies regarding environmental protection than under the Trump administration. Some areas that should see a surge in green jobs are STEM related to renewable energies; clean technologies; sustainable mining; sustainable forestry.
A couple of examples:
In 2020, renewable sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind) created more electricity than either coal or nuclear power in the first five months of 2020. The cost of renewable energy in 2020 was consistently cheaper than traditional fossil fuels. This trend is believed to continue in years to come. This should allow renewable energy companies to expand and hire more people. With the right government incentives, the job boom in renewables could be even greater.
Under Biden, if promises are kept, there should be a huge market for electric vehicles (EV). He has promised to impose stricter fuel-economy requirements, expand tax credits for EV purchases; make it easier to install public charging outlets; and transition the public vehicle fleet from gasoline to electric. All of this should see a large increase of jobs in this area.
Dr. Joseph Meert: Most employers want students to be well-rounded in core STEM subjects (math, chemistry and physics) along with the BS degree in geology. Ideally, the degree should include exposure to field work (field camp of some sort is ideal). In addition, we see that students who are proficient in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) either through coursework or certificate have a definite advantage in the market place.
