Duties/Responsibilities:
Biologists take trips typically lasting from two to ten days on vessels ranging from 40 feet to 125 feet long. Biologists log detailed information on the gear and fishing activities of the vessel. They set up a station on deck to collect catch and bycatch data as well as document interactions with marine mammals and seabirds. After attending a three-week (in person) paid training in Seattle, WA from (2/23/26 - 3/13/26), biologists are deployed from ports throughout Alaska. Gear types include benthic and pelagic trawl, hook and line, and pot.
Training includes instructions on sampling protocols, gear types, fisheries, fish identification, marine mammal/seabird/crab identification, and safety.
Observing is an excellent career in marine biology, as Biologists are widely recognized as strong, capable field biologists. However, this is a challenging job. Candidates must be mentally prepared to be away from home for three months, and physically able to handle heavy lifting, working odd hours, and long days in rough seas. For those who thrive as a biologist, a broad range of advancement opportunities with AIS are available. The opportunities include, but are not limited to, project management, field supervision, and cross-training for field work in other programs.
Compensation: Biologists will be paid an hourly rate; total compensation will range from $5,100 to $8,100 a month, depending on employee's availability and fishing effort. The AIS benefits package includes health, vision, and dental insurance, vacation, sick, and holiday pay.
AIS offers additional compensation opportunities, which may include data quality/performance incentives, service awards, fitness center reimbursement, and a referral bonus.
Minimum Qualifications:

Biologists may travel within Alaska when fishing seasons change, if they are needed to cover vessels in a different port.
Homeports:

Kantishna Roadhouse (KRH) is a full-service, backcountry lodge located 90 miles inside Denali National Park. Due to the Denali Park Road closure, the lodge is accessible only by small aircraft, and employees should expect a truly remote, wilderness-based work environment. Because of this remoteness, staff are expected to live on-site for the entire season (approximately June 1 to September 15) with no ability to leave the park on days off. Employees may enjoy hiking and exploring the surrounding backcountry during their free time, but travel outside the park is not available. KRH operates with a small, close-knit team and hosts a limited number of guests, so every staff member plays a vital, hands-on role in daily lodge operations. Room and board are provided at no cost to employees.
JOB SUMMARY: The Naturalist Guide staff is responsible for providing safe and educational guided hiking and other interpretive experiences and activities for guests at Kantishna Roadhouse (KRH).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Exercise good judgment as to trail conditions, weather, large animal behavior and the physical limitations of individual guests when leading and/or assisting guests on hikes and in other activities.
* Facilitate on-property activities for guests with the highest level of professionalism and respect, communicating times and locations of all activities and events to guests.
* Responsible for the general maintenance, cleaning, and repair of all guest equipment to include bicycles, fishing gear, rain gear, waders, boots, kayaks, paddle boards etc. to ensure all equipment is safe and functional.
* Use interpretive techniques to facilitate guests learning about Alaska and Denali's unique culture, and to appreciate the complexities of all ecosystems.
* Provide formal and informal educational programs involving various aspects of Alaska and Denali National Park. Each Naturalist Guide is required to create an evening program for the guests and present that program on a regular basis.
* Uphold National Park Service rules and regulations concerning the KRH concessions permit (training provided).
* Safely transport guests in vans on the Denali Park Road to and from trailheads, the airport, Wonder Lake, and the Fannie Quigley Cabin.
* Responsible for doing a pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the vans to include checking oil and other fluids, tire pressure and condition, etc.; and reporting any necessary maintenance to Maintenance for immediate attention.
* Responsible for cleaning (inside and out) of the KRH vans.
* Move guest luggage to and from the van/cabins.
* Grounds and greenhouse maintenance as assigned.

Join the National Park Service (NPS) team at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve as an Ecologist. * Conducting research and monitoring of park natural resources, effects of park and visitor activities on resources, and evaluating and meeting the park's need for information to make intelligent resource management decisions.
* Conducting vessel-based field data collection for multiple natural resource programs.
* Assisting with biological and physical data collection relevant to the terrestrial ecosystems of Southeast Alaska.
* Taking accurate and thorough field notes about ecological observation, and entering, organizing, and analyzing data with attention to detail.

Educate passengers about the environment and how to maintain the natural environment specifically dedicated to wilderness populations. Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Naturalist
Develop a tour narrative plan with the duty captain for each voyage, factoring in time constraints, weather, recent sightings, tide, season, etc.
Direct passengers boarding and disembarking, and during an emergency. Conduct safety and emergency orientation.
Work with Guest Services crew members to provide commentary and personal interaction/service with up to 150 passengers on tour.
Assist Guest Services crew members in the galley as needed. Including, but not limited to, distribution of snacks and food items as well as beverages. Employees are required to obtain TAPS certification to serve alcohol.
Vessel duties include line handling, assisting with docking/undocking of the vessel, and mooring with cruise ships as requested by the vessel captain.
Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
Must be creative and able to develop a tour narrative that speaks to glaciology, wildlife, natural and human history, and other aspects of Southeast Alaska's climate and environment.

SGS Anchorage is a full service, ISO accredited laboratory analyzing a variety of matrices for environmental pollutants. You will help provide local service to Alaskan clients that report to government regulatory agencies and private individuals.
You will have the opportunities to advance your knowledge by working in the only full-service environmental lab in Alaska. You will be trained in one or several departments throughout the laboratory. This position will build on your science education, and through hard work, will advance your skill set by gaining non-academic laboratory experience.
After your extensive onboarding training you will be placed in one or several of the following departments. In the Waters Department, you will work on bench chemistry methods, including colorimetric, gravimetric and potentiometric techniques. In the Metals digestions department, you will work with strong acids using HotBlock and AutoBlock techniques. In the Organic Extractions department, you will work with Solid Phase, Liq/Liq and Horn Sonication techniques. Finally, in the Sample Control department, you will receive samples and log them into our LIMS following the CoC. You will prepare sample kits and transfer samples throughout the whole laboratory. Beyond these departments there are potential roles in VOA prep, TCLP and WeighRoom.
Qualifications

Summary for Naturalist
Educate passengers about the environment and how to maintain the natural environment specifically dedicated to wilderness populations. Assist passengers boarding & disembarking; provide safety and emergency orientation; and work as a team member to distribute snacks and always maintain an impeccably clean vessel.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Naturalist
Develop a tour narrative plan with the duty captain for each voyage, factoring in time constraints, weather, recent sightings, tide, season, etc.
Direct passengers boarding and disembarking, and during an emergency. Conduct safety and emergency orientation.
Work with Guest Services crew members to provide commentary and personal interaction/service with up to 150 passengers on tour.
Assist Guest Services crew members in the galley as needed. Including, but not limited to, distribution of snacks and food items as well as beverages. Employees are required to obtain TAPS certification to serve alcohol.
Vessel duties include line handling, assisting with docking/undocking of the vessel, and mooring with cruise ships as requested by the vessel captain.
Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
Must be creative and able to develop a tour narrative that speaks to glaciology, wildlife, natural and human history, and other aspects of Southeast Alaska's climate and environment.
Requires public speaking ability and experience using PA systems.
Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.
Minimum Qualifications for Naturalist
Must be able to learn and retain pertinent background material provided on board, for presentation to passengers.
Must be able to work as a team with other crew to present coordinated narration and a quality experience for customers.
Public speaking experience is essential. Must be able to effectively communicate goals and intentions to large and small groups
Must be organized with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Always present a professional and friendly attitude to guests and crew.
Valid US driver's license and a clean driving record.
Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.
Required Certifications for Naturalist
Certifications required before the first day of employment include:
Valid, unexpired USCG approved CPR / First Aid certification.
Alaska Food Handler card.
TAPS certification to serve alcohol.

Biology and/or natural resource background.
College degree in natural resources or biology.

LIVING SPACE AND RENT STRUCTURE
Haines housing options consist of our employee campground, we have a few campers/RVs for senior staff, and limited space for employees seeking to bring their own campervans/trailers/RVs, most 1st year staff camp in the wooded area encircling the campers/RV parking. The campground has (4) plumbed bathroom/shower units and a communal cooking area - due to the presence of bears in our area we prohibit cooking/food storage outside the communal cooking space. The campground is located on the same lot as our warehouse/office making the commute to work convenient for any staff planning to come to Alaska without a vehicle. There is a laundromat located within a short walk down the street. A guide room is located on the corner of the warehouse with access to WiFi. Our employees are also welcome to pursue their own housing options in town.
Additional Notes
Rent deductions are made twice a month with 50% of the month's rent deducted from the 1st and 2nd paycheck.
Rent is prorated for the first month, rent for the last pay period will be deducted in full even if you vacate housing early.
Employees must vacate housing within 48 hours of their final shift unless other arrangements have been approved by management.
Pets - Must be approved by management, approval may be rescinded if your pet causes problems or is not friendly towards humans and other animals.

With a minimum commitment requirement of two months, working a minimum of 32 hours per week, participants are given the short term and rigorous opportunity to live on site, join our team, learn about AWCC operations, and gain valuable career skills. These dedicated volunteers are interested in learning about our organization, mission, and wildlife and desire to share their knowledge with others. Fellowship candidates may secure funding through their university, a grant, scholarship, or similar and work as sponsored volunteers. While preference is given to applicants being sponsored for a fellowship, we will accept volunteer applications without sponsorship. Applicants should indicate their sponsorship status in the Fellowship application form and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
While applicants can indicate departmental preference in their application, participants will have duties in both our Education and Animal Care departments, with tasks such as presenting daily talks and tours, assisting with school programs, preparing animal diets, and cleaning habitats. Tasks in this program are given on a scale of earned responsibility, starting with a training and orientation that includes learning about the animals in our care and shadowing staff.
**We are currently seeking a Fellow in the following dates:**
February 2026 - May 7th, 2026 (2-month period during this window)

Responsible for cleanliness and excellent maintenance of buses, tour equipment, and the locations that the tours visit.
Responsible for communicating all gear and vehicle issues to maintenance staff.
Complete appropriate driver checklists & paperwork at the end of each shift.
Collect waivers, tickets and making sure all guests have signed waivers.
Responsible for communicating all incidents to Haines Program Manager.
Guest safety first, then entertain guests, educate guests, and last but not least engage guests with questions.
Must at all times be clean, well-groomed, courteous, honest and reliable.
Must possess a positive attitude that is friendly, considerate, strong, and energetic.
Provide information about SE Alaskaenvironment, history, and the surrounding flora and fauna.
Must possess the desire to continually improve his/her knowledge and skills.
Must be willing to work as a strong team member, assisting in the maintenance of group morale.
Help load and unload guests and gear throughout the trips.
Assist with other jobs/projects as needed by AMG administration, this may include but is not limited to:
Assisting with food prep for cruise program.
Associated program maintenance needs.
Non-CDL driving of passengers or equipment.
Assist with grounds/lodging maintenance, cleaning, and general support.
You may be required to cross train in other areas to assist with other tours.
LIVING SPACE AND RENT STRUCTURE
Haines housing options consist of our employee campground, we have a few campers/RVs for senior staff, and limited space for employees seeking to bring their own campervans/trailers/RVs, most 1st year staff camp in the wooded area encircling the campers/RV parking. The campground has (4) plumbed bathroom/shower units and a communal cooking area due to the presence of bears in our area we prohibit cooking/food storage outside the communal cooking space. The campground is located on the same lot as our warehouse/office making the commute to work convenient for any staff planning to come to Alaska without a vehicle. There is a laundromat located within a short walk down the street. A guide room is located on the corner of the warehouse with access to WiFi. Our employees are also welcome to pursue their own housing options in town.
Additional Notes
Rent deductions are made twice a month with 50% of the months rent deducted from the 1st and 2nd paycheck.
Rent is prorated for the first month, rent for the last pay period will be deducted in full even if you vacate housing early.
Employees must vacate housing within 48 hours of their final shift unless other arrangements have been approved by management.
Pets Must be approved by management, approval may be rescinded if your pet causes problems or is not friendly towards humans and other animals.
Failure to abide by rules outlined in the employee manual and housing agreement may result in immediate expulsion from employee housing.

UMIAQ Environmental is seeking an Environmental Specialist to assist with research and documentation, logistics and planning, outreach and engagement activities, permit applications, and project tracking. Essential to this role is a love of writing and strong communication skills.
This is a full-time position located at Umiaq Environmental's main office located in Anchorage, Alaska.
**Responsibilities**
Essential functions will include:
+ Follow existing procedures for document review, organization, and file structure.
+ Develop detailed project descriptions based on information received verbally in meetings and on project drawings/ schematics.
+ Communicate clearly and respectfully to all coworkers, clients, and stakeholders.
+ Outreach by phone to coordinate public engagement activities
+ Draft, edit, and finalize environmental documents including Development Plans, Environmental Assessments, and Wildlife Interaction Plans.
+ Other duties may include: wetlands monitoring, report writing, proposal writing, preparation of cost estimates, and more.
+ Expertise in clear and concise writing is required.
+ It is essential that the Environmental Specialist works well with people and has demonstrated strong communication skills.
+ Extensive software skills are required, including working familiarity with MS Office Suite, Adobe, as well as Internet research abilities.
+ Planning, organizing, and prioritizing workload are primary duties. The Environmental Specialist must be flexible and capable of adapting to changing timelines.
+ Ability to work methodically and independently.
+ Ability to work as part of a team.
**Qualifications**
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Prior experience with environmental permitting or rural community planning is preferred, as is a bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Earth Science, or a related field.
+ Minimum 2 years' experience applying NEPA, obtaining project authorizations in Alaska, or working in a similar position/ similar field.
+ Familiarity with environmental and regulatory requirements for construction projects in Alaska, including an understanding of the NEPA process.
+ General understanding of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and landownership in the State.
+ Essential to this role are strong writing, grammar, and citation skills. Please provide a writing example.
