Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include: The hourly base rate of pay for this internship starts at $18.00, and may increase based on major and class standing. This position is for a student pursuing an environmental, health physics, chemical or general engineering degree and/or a degree in a related science such as physics, biology or chemistry. Tasks may include but not limited to updating environmental training material, performing environmental field walkdowns, researching chemical data to support waste characterization, field and desktop work associated with the staging and managing of hazardous wastes, working with technical staff on method efficiencies to the Environmental Bioassay Laboratory, working with Environmental Monitoring Program staff on the Annual Site Environmental Report, and various environmental compliance and monitoring support functions, as needed. Required Qualifications Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Must be a full-time student at an accredited four-year college or university, or within one year after finishing a degree program. Must have completed freshman year of college. Must successfully complete Savannah River Site General Employee Training and substance abuse processing. Position also provides leadership support in the Stream Restoration Ranking System (SRRS) program and compensatory mitigation credit monitoring/reporting for selected stream/wetland projects. The candidate must be proficient with various surveying equipment; GPS units; water quality monitoring instruments such as YSI multiprobes, ISCO automated samplers; mobile data collection systems; and cellular phones. Basic engineering design plan review experience for stream restoration projects is preferred What Will I be Doing: This position requires strong team and leadership skills to be proficient in performing field activities of surveying, collecting, and analyzing datasets to assess/determine conditions of unrestored/restored streams. Candidate will also use GIS to analyze and assess datasets collected for the Stream Walk Program. This position will draft reports and present data results, trends, etc to WQ and City of Charlotte staff periodically. The position will also respond to resident's request for service related to water pollution, investigate potential sources, enforce regulations, and ensure compliance with applicable local ordinances. The position will serve on an Emergency Response Team with other field staff approximately 2 to 3 weeks per year to respond to water pollution emergencies after normal business hours to enforce local ordinances and ensure compliance. The Environmental Specialist II (ES II) position is located in the Division of Waste Management, Brownfields Redevelopment Section (BRS). The ES II will primarily be a compliance inspector for the BRS, with at least 60% of work being field based. Field inspections will include driving to and from sites across the state; review of site conditions, land uses on and in the vicinity of the site; identification of potential issues with vapor mitigation systems during installation and post-construction; oversight of soil excavation, disposition, and management; observations of chemical storage practices; and other aspects of site conditions that bear on compliance with a brownfields agreement and land use restrictions. In addition to field inspections, the individual will conduct desktop reviews to determine compliance with existing land use restrictions and other provisions of brownfield's agreements. The ES II will complete and submit inspection reports detailing the results of inspections and provide assistance to Brownfields stakeholders. The area served will include Brownfields properties throughout the state. Provide services related to managing retail hazardous waste and pharmaceutical waste as well as characterizing hazardous, regulated, and non-hazardous waste. Properly process lab packs and prepare manifests and LDR's for hazardous waste shipment (according to State, EPA & DOT regulations). Maintain / manage own expenses and travel schedule to ensure customers are serviced on a regular and timely basis. Manage route to maintain compliance with 10 day transfer schedules. Provide training and support for customers on processes, findings and regulatory compliance. Provides written and verbal reports to customer and supervisor. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications At least 21 years of age High School diploma or GED Understand, read, and write English Able to repeatedly lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
