Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Professional and Scientific Positions.
BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Degree: Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below.
FOR GS-11: Successfully completed 1 year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: serving as an advanced analyst in the field of analytical chemistry for analysis of water samples (primarily stream water, soil leachate, and precipitation); using equipment and instruments including atomic absorption spectrophotometers, ion chromatographs, automatic titrators, ammonia analyzers, carbon analyzers, and nitrogen analyzers; performing preparations, quality control, calibrations, calculations, waste and sample disposal related to the analysis; training other technicians in the performance of routine duties; and generating reports based on analytical data produced.
FOR GS-12: Successfully completed 1 year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been at the GS-11 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Examples of creditable specialized experience may include planning and executing complex physical science studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work typically involved conventional methods and techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, physical scientists have the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.
FOR GS-13: Successfully completed 1 year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been at the GS-12 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Examples may include research design; analysis and implementation; analysis and/or consolidation of research findings data to identify strategic research areas or needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
* Knowledge of professional environmental physical scientific principles, practices, techniques, and procedures to effectively participate in project development, execution, training, and assistance in assigned projects (see Environmental Program Checklist).
* Knowledge to troubleshoot routine environmental physical science problems requiring investigation of unsanitary or questionable conditions in assigned projects (see Environmental Program Checklist).
* Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and other guidance to make decisions and recommendations concerning assigned restoration, compliance, conservation, pollution prevention and/or integration principles and practices.
* Skill to integrate an interdisciplinary team of professionals to include attorneys, public health specialists, public affairs specialists, biological scientists, environmental engineers, physical scientists, general engineers, community planners, regulators, other governmental officials, and community groups.

This job is ideal for someone passionate about learning the world of plants, soils, and rangeland ecology.

Job Description:
Follow field protocols to identify vegetation to species level
Gather species cover and composition data
Collect soil stability and soil profile descriptions

Crew Lead (additional responsibilities):
Create Hitch Plans: evaluate sample locations, plan routes, and identify access concerns

Qualifications and Skills:

Field experience, including the ability to work in and respond to adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time including extreme heat, monsoonal rains, and hazardous wildlife (i.e. rattlesnakes, scorpions)
Experience and willingness to spend multiple days (up to 8 days at a time) car-camping in remote areas; familiarity or willingness to learn and adhere to best practices for field safety and Leave No Trace principles
Excellent communication skills, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Positive attitude and attention to detail
Willingness to spend several hours per day and/or per week riding in, navigating, and driving a 4WD vehicle on paved and unpaved roads, often in remote areas on unimproved roads and driving for extended periods of time (2-3 hours at a time)

This role involves conducting inspections, analyzing workplace conditions, and supporting the implementation of health and safety programs.
Essential job duties and Responsibilities:
* Exposure Monitoring
* The Technician will be responsible for the completion of sampling surveys as outlined by the area Industrial Hygiene Advisor.
* Assigned surveys will be structured to include the Site, Similar Exposure Group, Sub-Similar Exposure Group, Agent / Agent Group, required number of samples, and relevant due dates for sample collection, laboratory analysis, data entry, and availability of results in the Cority Industrial Hygiene Data Management System.
* All samples will be collected according to relevant NIOSH / OSHA / ISO analytical method or generally accepted Industrial Hygiene Practices and guidelines.
* Samples included in an Industrial Hygiene survey may include, but not be limited to the below list:
* Personal air samples for metals (NIOSH 7300)
* Respirable Crystalline Silica (NIOSH 7500)
* Diesel Particulate Matter (NIOSH 5040)
* Surface Wipe Metals (SW-846 Method 3050 B)
* Legionella (SM 9260J)
* The Technician will be responsible for direct observation of employees performing work tasks during sampling event to ensure validity of sample conditions and work activities. Where direct observation of personal samples is not possible, accurate worklogs must be collected to document conditions present during sampling events.
* Investigation of instrument data logs may be necessary where required to identify instrument performance information that may require sample to be voided.
* Industrial Hygiene Monitoring Equipment Management
* The Industrial Hygiene team maintains an inventory of sampling equipment and instrumentation to be used in the collection and completion of assigned sampling / monitoring surveys.
* Accurate, documented evidence of daily instrument calibrations where required.
* Ensure annual equipment calibrations are completed on schedule, certificates of factory calibrations are received from OEM or certifying laboratory, and maintained in Cority against the equipment record.
* Identification of instruments or sampling components that are experiencing calibration "drift", indicating that the equipment must be sent for factory repair or calibration.
* Support in the troubleshooting and exchange of real-time gas detectors provided under a service contract between with Industrial Scientific.
* Laboratory Requisitions and Analysis
* Air samples collected to analyze against Metals, Silica, and Surface Metals agent groups will be submitted to the Central Laboratory for analysis. The Central Lab is an AIHA Accredited Laboratory capable of performing analysis of samples collected in accordance with the NIOSH 7300 and 7500 analytical methods.
* All other collected air samples (ie Diesel Particulate Matter, Asbestos, Legionella, etc) must be submitted to an accredited third party laboratory for analysis as instructed by the responsible Industrial Hygiene Advisor.
* Confined Space Monitoring Equipment Management
* The technician is responsible for the field and office support of confined spaced monitoring equipment, calibration, gas replacement, and docking stations where necessary.
* Personal Gas Detection Device Management
* The technician is responsible for the field and office support personal gas detection monitors, calibration gases, and docking stations where necessary.
* Data Management
* The Industrial Hygiene team utilizes Cority for all sampling information and data management.
* All sample related information must be accurately entered and managed in Cority in a timely manner.

In the Metals digestions department, you will work with strong acids using HotBlock and AutoBlock techniques. In the Organic Extractions department, you will work with Solid Phase, Liq/Liq and Horn Sonication techniques. Finally, in the Sample Control department, you will receive samples and log them into our LIMS following the CoC. You will prepare sample kits and transfer samples throughout the whole laboratory. Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
1. GS-7: You must have completed or will complete a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's from an accredited institution AND must have documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) at the undergraduate level in the following:
a) Grade Point Average 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum.
2. GS-9: You must have completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree:
a) Grade Point Average - 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate with two years of experience in a field related to organic/inorganic Chemistry, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, or Engineering, or on-the-job training in environmental protection compliance or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Working knowledge of computer programs and applications. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Applicants must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and traverse rough terrain in a variety of weather conditions. Additional consideration will be given to applicants with two or more years of college education in the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, or Engineering, and who have completed an accredited hazardous materials management or construction site stormwater inspector curriculum. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws regarding hazardous and regulated waste management, transportation, air quality, and stormwater management is also preferred. * Experience and willingness to spend multiple days (up to 8 days at a time) car-camping in remote areas; familiarity or willingness to learn and adhere to best practices for field safety and Leave No Trace principles
