Posting Details: Salary: Environmental Technician 1 $40K-$45K Environmental Technician 2 $45K-$50K Environmental Technician 3 $55K-$60K Grade: 17, 19, 20 Closing Date: Open Until Filled Job Summary: As an Environmental Technician, this position performs field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those that affect health. We will rely on you to set up and collect ambient air samples, calibrate and test air monitoring instruments, perform data collections checks, and use troubleshooting techniques to repair instruments. This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (3 days per week in the office/hoteling). Across our many agencies, boards, and commissions, many State employees participate in the State's Remote Work Program and are able to work remotely in their homes, in offices, and in hoteling spaces. All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance. Job Duties: • Works approximately 50% in the field conducting hands-on instrument maintenance / service, verifications, calibration, and completion of all required service logs, field sheets and documentation in accordance with SOP's, QAPP's and the EPA QA Handbook. • Conduct remote air monitoring site visits for assigned sites according to the EPA schedule and ADEQ QAPP's. • An understanding of the operation of the air monitoring sites including; ambient air monitoring instruments, meteorological instruments, data acquisition, sample setup and retrieval and all other auxiliary equipment. • Data verification for continuous and manual instruments. Review of data using: reports, graphs, charts or linear databases to identification of outliers, malfunctions or anomalies. • Documentation and completion of: electronic field sheets, site logs, instrument logs, instrument change out sheets, chain of custody, vehicle logs, travel logs and sample shipping. • Responds to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner. • Performs or leads projects under direction of a unit lead or manager. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): • Knowledge of and/or experience in gaseous and particulate instrumentation, Auto-GC, communication equipment, quality assurance and control, and data entry using relational databases; existing and new environmental monitoring techniques and equipment; methodologies and techniques for collecting environmental data including the design and function of environmental monitoring equipment and State and Federal environmental regulations. • Ability to setup, program, and troubleshoot communications' equipment; General knowledge of AirVision and ability to build sites, create import templates, and diagnose any data polling issues or concerns; General knowledge of and ability to use CRBasic and other communicate programming languages. • Knowledge and/or experience in environmental technology, mechanical engineering or electrical technician. • The ability to operate, maintain and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment; collect representative environmental samples according to standard operating procedures; follow guidance documents. Document/log hazardous waste collection and processing according to the established system. Secure and move heavy drums & containers using dollies and pallet jacks. Make container inspections throughout the central accumulation facilities operated by Tessera to ensure labeling, profiling, and environmental requirements are correct. Perform industrial service operations such as tank cleaning, waste bulking, pressure washing contaminated surfaces, hazmat cleaning, pump truck operations, and/or demolition service in accordance with established company policies and procedures. Perform & document required hazardous waste facility inspections to ensure Navy, State, and Federal compliance with rules or guidelines. Inspect and maintain equipment associated with waste handling (tools, trucks, can crusher, etc.). Assist customers in setting up satellite and less-than-90-day storage sites. Inspect collection sites for proper storage and labelling requirements. Record work order response in Maximo in a clear, concise manner with sufficient detail for the Navy to know what was accomplished. Self-inspect your completed work to ensure the final product meets requirements. Complete necessary forms and documentation or inspections according to the Navy's manuals, Tessera's SOPs, or regulatory requirements. Keep written records in an organized, presentable, and reproducible manner. Submit information according to due dates. Inspect assets, maintenance documents, and Maximo records to note any trends or recurring discrepancies that require action. Perform non-emergency and emergency response activities that deal with chemical, fuel, haz. waste, solid waste, water, and septage. Some emergency responses require you to be on-site and address the spill within 1 hour. Maintain HAZWOPER credentials. Must be able to determine PPE requirements and don PPE to perform spill response tasks, wear air purifying respirators (full-face masks), gloves, suits, boots, etc. Participate in the Facility Response Team training as required for on-water or land spills. Maintains FRT training credentials required by the Navy. Perform on-call duty rotations (24hr + weekends). Respond to off-duty environmental tasks. Clean tanks, sumps, and perform pump-outs. Must be able to work in confined spaces (e.g., tanks, vaults) and atmospheres with potential for exposure to various fuels or chemicals, some of which may be hazardous, toxic, or corrosive. May also be involved in asbestos, lead, and mold abatement, ASTs & USTs, and other assigned environmental projects. Clean all assigned grease traps, septic tanks, and oil water separators to specifications. Is a member of the Tessera snow team, drives plows, or performs other snow removal tasks. Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental programs in support of the Contract with the Navy. Ensure environmental compliance with assigned tasks while producing a quality product and service. Apply standard operating procedures or best management practices to field activities and guide junior-level technicians you work with. Assist in investigating and developing corrective and preventative actions for errors or potential violations. Follow applicable Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and Navy instructions, standards, and permit requirements Interact with Tessera's clients in a courteous and professional manner. The Washington Geological Survey's Surface Mine Reclamation Regulatory Program administers the Surface Mining Act (RCW 78.44), and we're looking to hire a Surface Mine Reclamation Specialist (Inspector) for northwestern Washington. This position is critical to help ensure surface mines in Washington state will be reclaimed to a well-vegetated, stable, and naturally draining condition, to provide the greatest practical degree of environmental protection, and to prepare the sites for their future, post-mining use. The inspector is the subject matter expert for surface mine reclamation permits in the coverage area, providing technical assistance and support to permit holders to achieve compliance with their permit and all applicable laws and rules. We are seeking a candidate with solid geological knowledge and skills, suitable for a role that requires self-direction, practical time-management skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. This is mainly a field-based position, with intermittent telework and office work required. Most of the permit site inspections will be relatively easy to access (although some may require long driving times or occasional overnight travel) and performed in conjunction with a permit holder and/or consultant, although the candidate must be willing to periodically work long days, alone, and in remote areas. The Program is set up to accommodate its Inspectors to live within the geographic areas for which they are responsible, to minimize the need for overnight travel. However, as noted above, some overnight travel will be required.Responsibilities: Surface Mine Reclamation Specialists (Inspectors) are responsible for inspecting surface mines for compliance with the Surface Mining Act (RCW 78.44) and its associated rule (WAC 332-18), as well as the approved reclamation permit and plan, and evaluating and adjusting performance securities to ensure Department liability is mitigated. Inspectors respond to requests for technical assistance with permit holders, miners, their consultants, and the general public to address various issues at mine sites and oversee compliance actions. They also collaborate with the Program's Regulatory Geologists, Assistant Director, and administrative support staff in preparing and delivering enforcement actions. This work is critical to program function and to achieving compliance, protecting the environment, and establishing final reclamation site conditions appropriate for a site's approved subsequent use.Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in geology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
