    With a focus on flu and COVID vaccines, this position will help to normalize for all Cooperative Extension audiences across the western region of the US that while we are out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus is here to stay, and we can take appropriate steps on an annual basis to protect the health of our families and ourselves. With the goal of helping to routinize flu and COVID vaccines among the general adult population on an annual basis, this position will focus on lower income, rural, and/or otherwise medically underserved populations, with attention to bringing culturally relevant educational content in the primary languages of diverse community groups across the region. Central to this role is developing community-centered, up-to-date, science-based vaccine educational materials, disseminating the materials to coincide with seasonal campaigns, and engaging local and statewide partnerships to inform and advance the success of these efforts. This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed and ends three years from date of hire with the possibility of extension if funding permits. The home department is Community Nutrition and Health. While this position normally is based in Davis, CA, this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements for applicants living in the State of California at this time. The first application review date will be 7/3/2025. Key Responsibilities: 50% Providing immunization education in the geographic area designated by the region. Delivering lessons using adult engagement techniques, extend education to community partners and/or program participants. Recruiting, training, and providing support for community organizations and representatives who act as volunteers to deliver UC approved curricula and activities. Preparing all reports as necessary for documenting program accomplishments. Customizing flyers with local info on where to go for vaccines. Attending health fairs and clinic and/or providing resources to local partners on getting vaccinated. Advancing strategic communications campaigns in focused geographic areas (where funds are available). Providing in person education with a focus on seniors / older adults as a priority population - in person education. Leveraging the resources in Extension EXCITE toolkit. Leads efforts to disseminate positive messaging about COVID vaccines intended to normalize and routinize vaccinations as part of a cyclical practice to protect your family. May provide language translations of class materials and/or simultaneous interpretation during classes into preferred language of participant population, as well as develop and share culturally relevant examples to enhance the effectiveness of the educational experience. 25% Providing leadership and professional development to Extension professionals in the region. Supporting educators to make the conceptual connection to other curriculum topics or other content areas/ topics that they are addressing in their communities. Convening a cohort or Community of Practice of extension practitioners across the region to learn and share with one another how they are integrating vaccine education into their work. Developing a replicable process for looking at needs assessment data e.g. vaccination rates, rural health, medically underserved populations. Providing training virtually and in person with other educators; creating opportunities for them to job shadow and/or observe Motivational Interviewing and other demonstrations. Working as a team member to develop annual work plans, share recommendations for improvement, and coach partner agencies on health-related work in their organizations. Developing educational resources in support with an Advisor/Academic. Introducing small-dose educational opportunities and content for educators to share within their existing programming, including passive displays and short videos. 15% Personal professional development, scholarship, program evaluation, and reporting. Co-leading needs assessment and evaluation activities on a cyclical basis to continually inform program improvement and stay relevant with community input. Participating in leveraging health equity and other public health frameworks to undergird vaccine education efforts, e.g. documenting the impact of social ecological model approaches that interlace individual, community, and societal interventions. 10% Developing and maintaining immunization community partnerships at community, regional, or state levels. Meeting with local partners (i.e. community leaders, school administrators, teachers, parent educators) to discuss the delivery of lessons to their students and clientele. Assist in developing outreach plans to ensure all eligible racial/ethnic groups have received information regarding program education opportunities and are welcomed to participate with inclusive program practices. Developing collaboration with other programs to coordinate outreach efforts. Attend community events and serve as representative and ambassador for the program. Maintain appropriate records to track the partnership activity, collaboration, and related community events. Engaging with state and local Department of Public Health contacts to stay up to date on available resources/regulations and availability of vaccines in those states. Identifying additional adult immunization topics to prioritize and address within local communities (e.g. HPV, RSV). Building buy in and garnering input into campaign messaging from local DPHs, to align with their efforts. Learning topics that are most relevant to communities re barriers, fears, opportunities, assets etc. Requirements: Associate Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Knowledge of community education, community engagement, teaching and/or facilitation best practices. Proficient in use of Windows-based computer with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Experience working with a diverse youth, adult and/or volunteers, including diversity in age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or physical and ability/disability). Experience working with underserved populations. Professors of Cooperative Extension, also known as UCCE (UC Cooperative Extension) Specialists, develop and conduct research and educational programs aimed at appropriate clientele groups in communities outside of UC campuses. UCCE Specialists have programs primarily focused on mission-oriented research or creative work that supports the university's efforts to extend knowledge, including outreach and community engagement. Mission-oriented research describes the complete research continuum that extends from basic research to applications of research results. This research is generally applied in nature and has, as a goal, the solution of a problem facing society that is related to the mission of the UCCE Specialist's discipline and the UCCE mission. UCCE Specialists will publish the results of applied research in a combination of research publication types, whether peer-reviewed or not, based on the relevant audiences served by the UCCE Specialist's program. However, it relies heavily on groundwater, especially in drought years, which increases pressure on supply and presents significant challenges to developing sustainable farming systems. Many farms and crops require innovative interventions through science-based solutions that address sustainability and enhance agricultural productivity under water-related challenges. Increasingly unpredictable climatic conditions are impacting natural systems as well as large, intensive cropping systems, making research and extension interventions critically important. The WSREC, where the position will be housed, is in the most intensive and diversified farming system in California, faced with multidimensional challenges centered around water availability and quality. The position will benefit from UC Merced's distinguished leadership in precision agricultural technology and its comprehensive portfolio of water research, education, and extension projects. This critical position will address important issues related to groundwater and salinity in this region, which have the potential to be scaled out across California and beyond. Network with scientists from DWR, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the US Geological Survey, as well as with private sector experts and stakeholders working on groundwater management plans and technologies. Work closely with Westland and other water districts and relevant authorities to address implementation requirements and challenges of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) and other related programs (e.g., The Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program). Publish in relevant UCANR outlets and external scientific journals appropriate for the field of groundwater management. Counties of Responsibility: This statewide position will support agriculture and its allied agencies and organizations in California. This is an exciting opportunity to impact diverse communities throughout the state. The Advisor will develop an innovative extension, education, and applied research program to address issues related to the North Coast food system's sustainability, resiliency, marketing, innovation, and competitiveness. This position offers the opportunity to address a myriad of issues related to diversified farming systems, food security, water quality compliance, irrigation management, soil health, farm sustainability, climate resilience, pest and disease management, enterprise analysis, succession planning, community food security, and overall natural ecosystem resilience. The Advisor will also provide academic oversight for the Master Gardener Program as these volunteers disseminate information to the public and support local horticulture education. This position will integrate ANR's research and extension education efforts across communities to improve the profitability and resilience of plant-based food systems across the region. UCCE Advisors are responsible for conducting applied research and extending knowledge. Research activities are applied and mission-oriented, focused on addressing challenges in our communities. Extension activities may include individual farm consultations, presentations, or organizing educational workshops, short courses, and field demonstrations. Publications are expected in various formats, such as newsletters, articles for the popular press, curricula, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed publications. Successful research and extension programs result in new information that improves knowledge or understanding and eventual adoption of new skills or practices, changed attitudes or policies, and improved environmental, economic, or social conditions. UCCE Advisors are evaluated through an academic advancement system based on four criteria: 1) extending knowledge, 2) applied research and creative activity, 3) professional competence and activity, and 4) university and public service. Location Headquarters: This position will be headquartered at the Humboldt County UCCE Office, 5630 South Broadway, in Eureka, or the Del Norte County UCCE Office, 586 G Street, Crescent City. The successful candidate may choose the location they prefer for their office headquarters. Position Details Humboldt and Del Norte Counties have numerous vegetable, fruit, and ornamental growers, including ~150 certified organic producers (22% of the region's agricultural production). The North Coast has an abundant supply of water, and the region's agricultural importance will likely increase as prolonged droughts and climate change impacts continue throughout the state. North Coast farmers grow a variety of crops sold at farmers' markets, roadside stands, community-supported agricultural programs, groceries, and restaurants. Agricultural entrepreneurs are the backbone of local food production, which supports rural food security, provides rural family incomes, sustains economic diversity, and enhances the regional quality of life. The North Coast hosts an internationally important bulb and lily industry, as Del Norte County produces 95% of the nation's Easter lily bulbs. The region's diverse producers, along with socially disadvantaged and underserved Hispanic, Native American, and Hmong agricultural entrepreneurs, will benefit from UC ANR extension support. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver relevant program content to have meaningful impacts in these local communities and throughout California. The Advisor will conduct applied research on topics relevant to local growers, based on a clientele needs assessment and the Advisor's expertise.
