In 2000, EPCOR bought 50,000 tons of carbon credits—typically selling for $1 to $3 per tonne—from Fortum.

The name EPCOR was introduced in 2001.

Consequently, in 2002, in the midst of a slump in the Pacific Northwest market, EPCOR brought a new natural gas-fired generating unit on line.

In January 2003, EPCOR divested 50 percent of its interest in G3 to TransAlta Corp., gaining $157 million in consideration for construction costs incurred.

In September 2005, EPCOR acquired all of Trans-Canada's interest in TransCanada Power L.P. for $529 million.

EPCOR was also named one of Canada's Top 10 Earth Friendly Employers in 2008.

The decision was made on April 17, 2009 to divest of power producing assets through the creation of a publicly traded company; Capital Power Corporation.

In 2011, EPCOR acquired Chaparral City Water Company from American States Water and the Arizona and New Mexico operations of American Water.

The lawsuits brought to light a management arrangement that has paid millions of dollars from Johnson Utilities customers to Johnson's adult children, Chris and Barbara, since at least 2013.

EPCOR achieved substantial completion in December 2016 and will be the plant's long-term operator.

EPCOR, which owns smaller water companies around the state, was installed as the management company despite the protests of the utility in 2018, when state regulators had enough with Johnson's history of service issues.

In May 2019, after the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality cited Johnson for more environmental violations than any other utility in the previous two years, the state hit Johnson with a $100 million lawsuit.
