1839

1839-44: William Nelson Pendleton "Having in large measure that enthusiasm for imparting knowledge which is the most essential attribute for a successful teacher, his first effort was to gain the attention of and excite the subject before him." - Susan Pendleton

Episcopal High School was founded in 1839 as the first high school in Virginia.

1845

1845-52: Edwin Augustus Dalrymple "Education of the mind, however, and the formation of business habits, are by no means the sole or most important aim of the School.

1849

Whilst these receive constant and proper attention, it is at all times, borne in mind that the morals, the heart, the affections, and the manners of the students are not, by any means, to be neglected." - Edwin Dalrymple, 1849 Episcopal High School Catalogue

1852

1852-61: John Peyton McGuire "To the average boy, the principal of a school embodies sternness and repression, and is the task master who exacts the performance of burdensome duties, a man who has no sympathy with the difficulties and temptations of boys.

1861

In 1840, Episcopal's student body tripled in size to accommodate more than 100 boys. It continued to grow until the Civil War, when it closed immediately after Union Army forces occupied Alexandria in 1861.

1866

The school reopened in 1866.

1900

Beginning in 1900, every fall the Maroon and the Woodberry Forest Tigers have competed on the football field.

1964

Founded in 1964, Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, which was originally known as Episcopal High School, has become synonymous with academic excellence and a whole-child educational experience.

1967

1967-81: Archibald Robinson Hoxton, Jr. '35 "…the greatness of a school’s head is measured not by what he changes, but by what he preserves.

1968

In 1968 the school's first two African-American students enrolled thanks to the generosity of the Stouffer Foundation which assumed an active role in the recruitment and placement of African-American students in prep schools across the South.

1970

With progress underway in the spring of 1970, the Episcopal community celebrated a major milestone when the school’s first graduates received their diplomas.

1971

In September 1971, Hurricane Edith hit Baton Rouge, spawning a tornado that destroyed the gym and damaged the Middle School building and Perkins Hall.

1991

Years later in April of 1991, sixty-foot flames were seen coming from the roof of Perkins Hall.

2018

In anticipation of the needs of future Episcopal students, the school celebrated a new generation of progress in 2018 with the completion of the Academic Commons, the first new academic building on campus in more than a decade.

2020

In March 2020, Episcopal and the globe grappled with the first pandemic in a century.

Two years later, in March 2020, the community gathered again to celebrate the opening of the 22,000+ square foot athletic field house.
