PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Operate one or several types of power construction equipment including but not limited to motor-graders, bulldozers, rubber tire backhoes or trackhoes, rollers, articulated dump truck drivers, front-end loaders or hydraulic excavators to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete, asphalt, or other hard surface pavement on road beds, parking lots, airport runways and taxiways. May perform minor repairs and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Utilities Division Heavy Equipment Operators
1.) Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, power cranes, shovels, or related equipment.
2.) Start machine, engage clutch, and push and move levers, switches, and pedals to guide machine along forms or guidelines and to control the operation of machine attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms.
3.) Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain.
4.) Operate machines to spread, smooth, level, or steel-reinforce stone, concrete, or asphalt on road beds or other job sites as needed.
5.) Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact earth fills, foundation forms, and finished road materials, according to grade specifications.
6.) Observe grade in order to adjust machine settings and indicate low spots for workers to add material.
7.) Conduct documented pre-shift inspections of equipment for safety and mechanical defects.
8.) Work long, flexible hours as demanded by our customers including nights, weekends, and work outside for extended periods during all seasons of the year.
10.) Align machines, cutter heads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers.
11.) Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
12.) Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment, using mechanics' hand tools. Conduct pre-shift inspections and report any concerns or malfunctions to supervisors.
13.) Learn and follow safety regulations.
14.) Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
15.) Perform necessary work while complying with all company policies and procedures.
16.) Perform additional duties as required or directed by their immediate supervisor or other manager.
17.) Must have regular and predictable attendance.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
High school diploma or GED
Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
Work Experience:
Must be able to operate multiple pieces of equipment.
Must be willing to use hand tools while not operating equipment.
Minimum of 3 years' operating and utility work experience.
Must have a good work ethic and work as a team player; including operating different types of equipment and general labor work if needed.
SPECAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience pulling trench boxes and sloping excavations.
Heavy Physical Demands:
Heavy physical effort required including pulling and lifting or moving heavy weight material with frequent lifting or moving materials or equipment (over 80 pounds). If a position specific Physical Demands sheet is attached, it will describe in more detail the physical demands that are required.
Physical Activity:
Position requires the ability to continuously work around any or all of the following: noise, dust, heat, cold, oil and heavy equipment. Personal protective equipment is normally required of the position. General Summary of the Position
Teamwork is a major part of every position at Ruston Paving, so it is important to note that, aside from all other listed responsibilities, you must be willing to assist others and be as productive as possible. The heavy equipment operator safely operates a variety of motorized equipment used in the preparation, repair, reconstruction, and construction of site work and asphalt paving projects. The operator must perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in accordance with the essential functions of the position.
Essential Functions

Operates construction or power equipment, including but not limited to an excavator, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, front end loader, skid steer, asphalt paver, dirt/asphalt roller, asphalt reclaimer, soil stabilizer, and asphalt milling machine.
Works with and assists the grading or paving crews to remove or install stone, dirt, asphalt pavement or storm water systems with or without the use of heavy equipment. Periodically, it may be necessary to assist ground personnel with the use of hand tools based on the project s scope of work.
Occasionally operates jackhammers, saws, and other small equipment and tools as required.
Performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs, reports complex mechanical problems for shop repairs, and cleans equipment as needed.
Ensures heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards as determined by law, jobsite requirements, and company policies.
Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles driven, equipment moved, and trailers towed, noting any defects or deficiencies both verbally and in writing.
Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.

Additional Requirements and Benefits
Employee shifts start and end at the local division office/shop. Transportation to and from the job site is provided.
We pride ourselves on our clean appearance on every job site! Laundered uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided and must be worn in accordance with the company policy.
Although it does not occur very often, projects may require out of town overnight stays. Per diem pay is offered when these projects occur.
We provide double time pay for weekend work.

This position functions as the primary crew leader and heavy equipment operator for each crew assigned to the Easement Maintenance Program within the Sewer Maintenance Division. Crews within this program are tasked with removing vegetation from sanitary sewer easements in order to establish or maintain access for staff and heavy equipment, typically utilizing a wide range of gas-powered equipment from chain saws and weed eaters up to large tractors, bushhogs, and forestry mulchers. PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Operate one or several types of power construction equipment including but not limited to motor-graders, bulldozers, rubber tire backhoes or trackhoes, rollers, articulated dump truck drivers, front-end loaders or hydraulic excavators to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete, asphalt, or other hard surface pavement on road beds, parking lots, airport runways and taxiways. May perform minor repairs and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, power cranes, shovels, or related equipment.
Start machine, engage clutch, and push and move levers, switches, and pedals to guide machine along forms or guidelines and to control the operation of machine attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms.
Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain.
Operate machines to spread, smooth, level, or steel-reinforce stone, concrete, or asphalt on road beds or other job sites as needed.
Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact earth fills, foundation forms, and finished road materials, according to grade specifications.
Observe grade in order to adjust machine settings and indicate low spots for workers to add material.
Conduct documented pre-shift inspections of equipment for safety and mechanical defects.
Work long, flexible hours as demanded by our customers including nights, weekends, and work outside for extended periods during all seasons of the year.
Align machines, cutter heads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers.
Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment, using mechanics' hand tools. Conduct pre-shift inspections and report any concerns or malfunctions to supervisors.
Learn and follow safety regulations.
Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
Perform necessary work while complying with all company policies and procedures.
Perform additional duties as required or directed by their immediate supervisor or other manager.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
High School diploma or GED.
Work Experience:
A minimum of 2 years operating experience on dozer, excavator or rollers. Experience on multiple machines is a plus.
Must have good work ethic and be dependable.
Must be able to work various hours as needed.
Must be willing to work out of town if needed.
GPS experience a plus but not required.
Heavy Physical Demands:
Heavy physical effort required including pulling and lifting or moving heavy weight material with frequent lifting or moving materials or equipment (over 80 pounds). If a position specific Physical Demands sheet is attached, it will describe in more detail the physical demands that are required.
Physical Activity:
