NE15 The position will report to the Transportation Program Director and will be responsible for classroom and/or hands-on operational instruction of students in the field for the Heavy EquipmentOperator Program.
Adjunct faculty serve as temporary part-time faculty and are appointed as needed on an ongoing basis. The primary duty is effective teaching and recordkeeping associated with college-level career technical educational courses.
MAJOR DUTIES
The instructor will share responsibilities with other members of the department for program and curriculum development, maintaining a record system for student achievement, and delivering /creating customized training for local industry.
The instructor will successfully complete instructor training provided by the National Center for Construction Educational and Research.
As assigned, prepares and teaches courses both in a classroom setting and at the dig site; delivers lectures, assignments and tests; evaluates and records student performance; teaches hands-on driving skills in College-provided pieces of heavy equipment. The instructor will tutor, mentor, and serve as an exemplary model of professionalism for students.
Submits grades by deadline.
Assesses course and program level learning outcome attainment.
Maintains appropriate course documentation such as syllabi, tests, lesson plans, etc.
Resolves student issues and concerns or refers to Transportation Program Director.
Performs related duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED and with a minimum of seven years of industry experience in which serving as a heavy equipmentoperator was the primary responsibility.
Associates Degree with five years' experience in industry serving primarily as a heavy equipmentoperator.
Additional experience in the field, a current Class A CDL license along with demonstrable teaching ability highly desirable.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipmentoperated.
Must be able to pass drug screening test and successfully complete Defensive Driving Course.
Adjunct faculty are hired on a semester basis, depending upon the instructional needs identified for each semester.
It is the policy of San Juan College that adjunct faculty may teach no more than 9 credit hours per semester, except upon approval by the Vice-President of Learning and the Associate Vice-President of HR and Legal Activities.
Payroll and Benefits:
Adjunct faculty are paid bi-weekly. Adjunct faculty are paid at either $778 per credit hour, or at an hourly rate as applicable.
Adjunct faculty teaching one (1) credit class or more are eligible for the tuition waiver benefit. Tuition may be waived for one class, up to four (4) credit hours per semester, and any one (1) credit HHPC Fitness Conditioning class for each semester they are employed. This tuition waiver benefit may be transferred to a qualified family member for the semester they are employed. If transferring to a qualified family member, proof of family status is required (i.e., marriage certificate, affidavit of domestic partnership or birth certificate) and must be verified by Human Resources.

Operate heavy equipment such as a track dozer, grader, backhoe, loader, coal haulers, scraper, end dump truck and water truck in all aspects of surface coal mine. Perform proper equipment startup and shut down procedures. Operate within acceptable range of all gauges on instrumentation panel. Performs job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures and State and Federal environmental regulations.
Other Duties:
Work with other equipment in a safe and organized manner. Assist maintenance department with route repairs. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have good communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to work with GPS units in the equipment. Must be willing to work shift work and be eager to accept responsibility and challenges. Must be able to recognize unsafe and adverse conditions and must have the knowledge to correct them.
Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma/GED required. Vocational training or operating experience preferred.
