ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES As Loader: Work behind a refuse truck in picking up refuse, waste materials, trash and discarded house and building furnishings Load refuse into a truck, exercising caution in lifting and handling heavy materials Replace containers on curb; tags unsafe containers Clean up debris around areas as schedules permit Work at compost and/or recycling facility Perform various labor tasks, as needed As Driver: Act as working leader on truck Drive a solid waste disposal packer or other rubbish collection truck along a prescribed route Make stops as required to load refuse onto truck Dispose of refuse at designated sites Perform pickup and loading work Provide information regarding trash pickup schedules or procedures to residents and receives complaints when required Complete routine driver's reports including daily vehicle inspection reports Clean and check assigned equipment daily for safe operation Inform supervisor of problem situations along the route and mechanical trouble of equipment Instruct other crew members in refuse pickup and disposal procedures and schedules Other duties as assigned PERIPHERAL DUTIES Attend monthly safety meetings Train new refuse workers, as needed Make appropriate decisions for proper customer service Occasionally assign driving duties to other crew members Help other team members accomplish tasks Abide by all Solid Waste Division standards, conduct and policies, and abide by all standards, conduct and policies as stated in Employee Handbook Requirements Education, Licensure, or Certification High School Diploma or GED, preferred CDL Class B with air brake licensure required Experience, Specialized Knowledge, and Other Requirements Minimum six months experience preferred Safe driving record Safe driving practices and knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on streets, roads and highways Methods of lifting heavy articles and loads in a safe manner Skills and Abilities - With or without accommodations Physical Has ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, twisting, squatting, reaching overhead, grasping, lifting, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and handling of objects Has ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds Has normal eyesight and depth perception, with or without correction Hears normal tones, with or without correction Has ability to work within environment described below Cognitive Work under supervision and cooperatively with other employees Ability to listen, understand and communicate information Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environments, performing a variety of frequently changing tasks The physical and cognitive demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
