Erskine College company history timeline

1839

Established in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Synod of the South as an academy for men, the college became the first four-year, church-related college in South Carolina.

1925

A planned merger of the college, the seminary, and the Due West Woman’s College paved the way for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges in 1925.

1940

A century after its beginnings as a men's school, cheerleaders at the now coeducational Erskine College pose in this 1940 photograph.

1949

Constructed in 1949, McCain Library was named in honor of Doctor J. I. McCain, head of the English Department at Erskine College for forty-nine years.

2006

Erskine College will be, by God's grace, what it has been called to be—a Christian liberal arts college open to all students." Doctor Randall T. Ruble was voted in as the President of Erskine College and Seminary on October 26, 2006.

2011

In April 2011, David A. Norman was inaugurated into the office of President.

2013

Although Erskine is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, it was placed on "Warning" status following its most recent decennial accreditation review in December 2013.

2014

On July 18, 2014, it was announced that Erskine College and Seminary called Doctor Paul Kooistra, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America, as their president.

In 2014, Erskine celebrated 175 years as a Christian academic community.

2015

On February 27, 2015, Erskine College released a statement that students are expected to "follow the teachings of scripture concerning matters of human sexuality."

2019

Enrollment has remained between 500 and 600 for the past several decades, but increased to nearly 800 at the opening of the 2019-20 school year.

2021

In February 2021, President Robert Gustafson announced he would end his tenure as president after nearly 5 years in the role, effective June 30, 2021.
