About the Position
Drives carriages in the Historic Area, taking visitors for scheduled rides. Drives carriages and wagons for special events and programs. Interprets driving, travel and transportation in 18th-century Virginia with emphasis on carriages and horses. Follows procedures for care of horses and carriages. Assists Livestock Husbanders in care and movement of sheep, cattle, poultry as assigned; other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
Prepares horses for street work, including grooming, washing, checking hooves and condition of the shoes. Advises Head Coachman or Stable Operations Supervisor of any issues.
Assists with cleaning of harnesses and carriages daily as needed to meet the Foundation's standards.
Fits harnesses to horses in a safe and efficient manner; advises Supervisors of any worn or damaged parts that need replacing.
Within 1-4 months, learns to drive horse-drawn carriages. Drives carriages taking visitors for scheduled rides throughout Historic Area; drives for special programs and events as assigned.
Work toward earning Level 1 CAA certification.
Provides interpretation of transportation and movement in 18th-century Virginia, with emphasis on use of carriages and horses. Basic interpretation of roles of other livestock (cattle, sheep, poultry).
Monitor horses for illness, injury, shoe problems; report issues to the Supervisors, and assist in treating the animal as necessary.
When needed, help maintain pastures, fencing and watering devices.
When needed, drive trucks and trailers to feed and move livestock. Assist in basic maintenance of trucks, trailers, golf carts, mowers, and tractors.
Assist with special programs including giving tours of the stables to special guests as assigned.

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not required for this position.
As a School Car Driver, you'll be assigned to a route and will be responsible for:
Driving students to their destination and making the return trip;
Assisting in the boarding process and off-loading process of students;
Operating a radio to report unusual traffic conditions, vehicle condition, passenger emergencies, or other issues that may arise;
Performing pre-trip inspection of a medium-sized passenger vehicle;
Reporting operating and equipment deficiencies;
Cleaning and fueling vehicle;
Maintaining discipline in the vehicle in order to ensure passenger safety.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and some experience operating passenger vehicles or similar equipment and in dealing with the public. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
A valid driver's license is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required to perform the duties of this position.

Title: School Car Driver
Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities, to ensure the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.
Essential Functions:
Safely drives a school car on days when school is in session over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, loading and unloading students at designated locations.
Transports students, teachers and others on school field or activity trips.
Inspects assigned car on a daily basis prior to transporting of passengers to ensure that car is in good, clean and safe working order.
Cleans and refuels car as needed.
Ensures that a communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
Reports all mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents, promptly.
Arranges for and ensures completion of routine maintenance of car (e.g., oil change); transporting the car to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.
Maintains order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner among students being transported in accordance with district policies and procedures; reports any incidents involving student discipline.
Observes and tracks route timing, such as total time en-route, time between stops, loading and unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiency, as requested.
Maintains and submits records and reports as required.
Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone in car without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed car at the end of all car routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
Inventories caremergency and first aid supplies and equipment; reports needs to the Director.
Prepares aides and children for car drills and ensures car evacuation drills are held as required.
In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written report as required.
Attends and participates in trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
