In a letter to investors dated Thursday, Mindich, a star Goldman Sachs Group GS, -1.11% alum, said he was shutting Eton Park Capital Management, that he founded in 2004.
In 2004, he launched his fund with $3.5 billion, which The Wall Street Journal described at the time as one of the largest startup funds on record.
In 2008, one of the worst years for hedge funds, Eton Park lost 10 percent, but that was far better than most other firms fared.
The number of active hedge funds is at its lowest level since 2012.
One of the hedge fund’s best years came in 2013, when it returned 22 percent.
In 2015, the couple made a $15 million gift to fund public service initiatives at Harvard.
The firm, which has $7 billion in assets under management, was down 9% in 2016 and is flat in the year to date.
Mindich to close the firm comes after a tough year in 2016, when Eton Park’s returns were down about 9.4 percent.
