What's the role?
We are looking for an EngineeringManager, Search Ranking to join our Search Relevance initiative at Etsy. You'll lead a talented team of engineers and applied scientists responsible for the ranking algorithms and systems that determine how hundreds of millions of unique listings are ordered for Etsy buyers.
This team plays a pivotal role in defining and delivering Etsy's search experience - helping buyers find items they'll love by combining relevance, personalization, and marketplace value in every search result. The work directly contributes to Etsy's growth by driving better buyer engagement, higher conversion, and a healthier marketplace. As the EngineeringManager, you will provide technical direction, strategic focus, and people leadership - guiding your team through iterative experimentation, learning from data and outcomes, and delivering high-impact improvements to Etsy's search ecosystem.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy's Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. The Search Ranking team is a core part of the Search Relevance organization. We build large-scale ranking systems that optimize how Etsy surfaces results - ensuring every search connects buyers with the most relevant, inspiring, and meaningful listings.
Our work spans the full lifecycle of modern ranking systems: from model architecture and data pipelines, to feature engineering, experimentation, and production deployment. We use data-driven iteration and continuous learning to make every search more human, intuitive, and rewarding.
You'll collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, and other engineering teams to translate insights into measurable impact. The team's focus on strategic delivery, technical excellence, and iterative experimentation is key to scaling Etsy's marketplace while staying true to our mission.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Lead and grow a team of engineers and applied scientists building and maintaining ranking algorithms that power Etsy's search results.
Define and execute the technical strategy for ranking systems, ensuring we balance innovation, scalability, and reliability.
Partner cross-functionally to set clear goals and success metrics, ensuring that the team's work directly contributes to Etsy's business and marketplace growth.
Foster a culture of experimentation and learning, using data, A/B testing, and iteration to drive continuous improvement in search relevance and engagement.
Collaborate with teams across Search teams, ML Platform, and Infrastructure to ensure reliable, scalable systems and shared learning across Search.
Ensure the team delivers strategically impactful projects that balance user experience, ranking performance, and business outcomes.
Promote engineering and ML best practices, from model quality evaluation to operational excellence in production environments.

Job Description
Versant is seeking a Director of Salesforce Engineering to lead the design, development, deployment, support, and evolution of Versant's enterprise-wide Salesforce ecosystem-spanning Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud (Engagement), and Data Cloud/CDP. This leader will drive the engineering vision for our customer and business-facing platforms, ensuring reliability, scalability, and innovation in support of Versant's growth strategy. You will build and lead a high-performing team of engineers and solution architects responsible for platform architecture, integration, and delivery.
You'll partner with stakeholders across Marketing, Sales, Product, Data & Analytics, and Corporate Technology to align our Salesforce strategy with business goals and technical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
(Four-Pillar Summary) Platform Strategy & Architecture Define the engineering vision, standards, and multi-year roadmap for Salesforce platforms (Sales, Service, Marketing, and Data Cloud).
Architect scalable, secure, and integrated Salesforce solutions that meet enterprise and customer needs.
Align platform architecture with Versant's digital strategy, ensuring flexibility for future expansion and new capabilities.
Evaluate and adopt emerging Salesforce technologies (AI, automation, data unification) that enhance performance, usability, and business outcomes.
Partner with Product, Data, and Enterprise Technology leaders to ensure cohesive architecture and alignment across corporate systems.
Delivery & Operations Excellence Lead end-to-end Salesforce delivery, from requirements and design through testing, deployment, and sustainment.
Oversee technical delivery, CI/CD pipelines, and environment management to ensure stability and predictable releases.
Drive best practices in DevOps, code quality, documentation, and automated testing to enable faster innovation with minimal risk.
Collaborate with data, integration, and infrastructure teams to ensure seamless interoperability across applications.
Monitor platform performance, availability, and incident response, ensuring operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Partner & Team Leadership Build and lead a blended organization of internal engineers, architects, and contracted delivery partners.
Serve as the accountable leader for all contracted and managed service partners, ensuring delivery quality, cost effectiveness, and strategic alignment.
Define clear scopes of work, service-level expectations, and governance processes with delivery partners.
Foster a culture of collaboration, ownership, and learning-balancing partner execution with internal capability growth.
Mentor and develop team members, driving engagement, accountability, and professional development.
Manage budgets and resource plans, ensuring optimal allocation across initiatives.
Governance, Security & Stakeholder Alignment Ensure Salesforce platform compliance with corporate security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
Establish and maintain engineering governance: version control, change management, documentation, and technical standards.
Partner with Legal, Privacy, and Security teams to safeguard customer and business data.
Collaborate with leaders across Marketing, Sales, Product, and Corporate Technology to align goals and communicate progress.
Provide executive-level visibility into platform health, roadmap execution, risks, and outcomes.
Act as the technology ambassador for Salesforce engineering, representing the function across Versant's leadership forums.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5+ years leading Salesforce engineering or CRM platform teams.
Expertise with Salesforce platform architecture, including Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, or Data Cloud/CDP.
Deep understanding of Apex, Lightning, Flows, API integration, middleware, data modeling, and security best practices.
Proven success delivering enterprise-scale Salesforce implementations with multiple integrations and high user adoption.
Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor technical teams, manage budgets, and balance internal/external delivery models.
Background in agile delivery and DevOps principles, including automated testing and CI/CD.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (Master's preferred).
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
Desired Characteristics Experience in media, entertainment, or consumer subscription businesses.
Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure for Salesforce integrations and data pipelines.
Experience implementing Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement or Data Cloud/CDP for audience segmentation or personalization.
Passion for leading teams through large-scale transformation and modernizing legacy CRM systems. Knowledge of privacy and compliance frameworks (GDPR, CCPA) as they relate to customer data and consent management.
Additional Requirements: Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

Salary range: $170,000 - $200,000 (bonus and long-term incentive eligible)

What You Will Do:
• Plan the delivery of the overall Engineering Product Development programs and associated activities in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization by establishing and maintaining the program charter(s) and program plans

EDUCATION:

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years directly related experience with 2 years Project Managerial experience
Must have experience with technical management of engineering project teams.
Must have experience in generation/tracking of project schedule, engineering resource allocation, and task assignments, budgets, requirements management, and customer interface
Previous hands-on experience designing hardware and/or software a plus
Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills, as well as excellent communication skills from teams to Executives, both verbal and written
Strong experience in managing program financials, business cases and contracts
Strong relationship and leadership skills along with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
Build relationships by establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
Ideally have Project Management experience in a large, complex engineering environment, running firmware software (products) for electronics/embedded systems and devices
Well organized with excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience reviewing customer specifications, working with suppliers, and manufacturing to deliver finished products according to those specifications is critically important
