1989

It was not enough for Chang Yung-fa to build Evergreen Marine Corporation, one of the largest container shipping lines in the world. It was incorporated on March 8, 1989; start-up capital was $400 million.

In October 1989, the newly formed EVA Airways Corporation placed a US$3.6 billion order for 26 aircraft from Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, including Boeing 747-400 and MD-11 airliners.

1996

It also bought shares in Taiwan Airlines, raising its stake from 30 to 40 percent in 1996.
