The Gas System Planning Engineer position will analyze, plan, and design natural gas distribution systems using engineering principles, hydraulic models, and system knowledge. The Engineer will execute measurable results in system analysis and reliability, long range planning, and peak demand preparedness. Collaboration is essential with key stakeholders across the Company, including engineering, operations, gas control, energy supply, electric system planning, clean technologies, sales, finance, regulatory, and compliance. Provides a high level of coordination and support on specific projects and cross-functional efforts, collaborating with and often leading a team of professionals and working cross-functionally with Distribution Integrity Management Programs (DIMP) and Asset & Risk Management, Compliance Programs. This position performs, or assists in, major/complex projects including the design, procurement, installation and testing of systems and devices that will repair, replace, improve or increase the Gas organization's physical assets and provide for permit requirements and regulatory compliance. Performing all of these tasks with specific consideration of MA DPU Order 20-80 as it relates to the future of gas and looking at non-pipeline alternatives to traditional gas projects, will be a critical responsibility for this position. Familiarity with Non-Pipeline Alternatives (NPA) would be a plus for this role. Essential Functions: Build, utilize, and maintain hydraulic models to analyze and plan natural gas distribution systems Verify hydraulic model performance using actual system flows/pressures & calibrate hydraulic models using statistical regression analyses of market and large customer demands Collaborate with gas control and supply services on capacity management and planning Conduct feasibility studies to determine gas service requirements for existing and potential customers Identify locations for isolation valves for optimum system control Provide timely emergency support Develop winter operations plans and SCADA alarm parameters Recommend placement of pressure charts to identify and investigate potential deficiencies and optimize recommendations to maintain/enhance gas distribution infrastructure reliability Develop long range plans for infrastructure replacement, load growth, and system optimization Collaborate with Electric System Planning & Clean Technologies to analyze capacity, with respect to integrated energy planning and non-pipeline alternatives to traditional gas projects Prepare formal documents for legal filings and discovery requests from state and regulatory bodies Foresee betterment needs and recommend system improvements Develop, prioritize, and submit capital budget requests to address load growth, peak demand preparedness, and reliability. Provide information and analysis to support regulatory initiatives Operate, maintain, and enhance computer hardware/software necessary to support accurate system analysis & integrate new technologies and existing Company systems Designs systems or installations to fit the Company's objectives, with some latitude for independent action and decision making, conforming to industry standards, guidelines and regulations of federal, state and local authorities. Specifies and procures materials and equipment, coordinates in-house and contract labor to install and test new installations in a timely fashion with input from vendors, engineers and Company departments. Develops and maintains procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations and codes. Trains junior staff and reviews all their work. Oversees the procurement of all federal, state and local permits and notifications required for each job. Provides technical and financial support to upper management for future needs and budget allocations. Supports values and commitment to Eversource's mission, strategy and values. Provides direction or assistance in carrying out assignments. Coordinates resources required to complete processes or projects. Utilizes fundamental gas flow equations and hydraulic software to design or recommend changes to existing gas piping systems, including Synergi Gas by DNV Qualifications: Technical Knowledge/Skill: Thorough knowledge of distribution construction and maintenance work practices and procedures. Knowledge of applicable governmental codes and regulations Knowledge of welding and fusing principles Working knowledge of environmental requirements affecting related activities Familiarity with MS computer operations Some exposure to gaseous atmospheres, construction site hazards, and hazards on customer's property Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology or related disciplin e Additional Applicable Degrees and/or Industry Credentials/Certification a Plus Experience : Five (5) to Eight (8) years of related engineering experience Gas experience is a plus Working Conditions: Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required. Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary. Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs are involved. Job can require traveling to operating districts, gas facilities and companies within and outside the state. This position is categorized as safety-sensitive for the purpose of drug testing. The Principal Engineer must have extensive experience with modeling and planning the bulk electric power system, exhibit strong technical skills to apply to long-range load forecasting, testing and planning, and leverage company and industry data to anticipate optimal design for infrastructure improvements such as AC transmission lines, battery storage, FACTS devices, Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), etc. Studies will be conducted in adherence to criteria from Eversource, ISO-New England, Northeast Power Coordination Council (NPCC), and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). This role also directs and prepares documents/testimony, written responses, and may testify for regulatory requirements and proceedings. This role represents the Company on regional and national transmission committees transmission planning matters for New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE as needed. Essential Functions: Serve as a technical specialist to transmission planning in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes. Recognized as the technical expert both internally and externally. Ability to understand the implications and contribute to the development of the integrated power system which includes load, generation, renewables, energy markets, regulated transmission and distribution Lead, perform reliability and/or strategic scenario-based planning driven studies variety of existing and forecast system conditions. These studies include voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limit, short circuit, electromagnetic transient and stability assessments.
