The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an experienced Backhoe Operator to join its Water, Sewer, and Streets (WSS) Bureau. This position is primarily responsible for operating a backhoe to excavate trenches on construction sites and roadways, perform backfilling and fine grading, and operate other related equipment to support the construction and maintenance of seasonal public works projects.
Specific duties include:
* Operating a uni-loader, backhoe, forklift, skid steer, and/or crane truck with precision, considering site and utility line locations, and determining appropriate methods of operation for other properties and infrastructures;
* Moving materials, equipment, and grading surfaces for construction;
* Loading various size trucks (medium 6 axle, tandem, 10 axle) and driving/operating other equipment such as asphalt rollers (walk behind and riding), asphalt/concrete saws (handheld and walk behind), and front-end loader;
* Performing routine and preventive maintenance on equipment;
* Providing technical guidance and on-site training to crew members;
* Assuring that all applicable safety requirements are met and providing safety guidance to crew members;
* Maintaining storage areas by consolidating and organizing equipment and materials for efficient operations; and
* Serving as back-up in the absence of Master Technician and performing other job-related duties as assigned.
The successful employee will be a safety-oriented team player, with effective communication skills, and demonstrated experience operating a backhoe on construction projects in a public right-of-way.
NOTE: This recruitment may be used to fill comparable vacancies within the department.
Minimum:
* High school diploma/equivalent;
* Three (3) years of experience in public works, construction, or another trades vocation that demonstrates the ability to perform semi-skilled to skilled manual maintenance and/or construction;
* One (1) year of experience operating heavy/specialized equipment such as backhoes, concrete trucks, medium and tandem dump trucks, crane trucks, front-end loaders, or asphalt rollers, asphalt/concrete saws, skid steers and forklifts and/or other specialized equipment; and
* Must possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
* Two (2) years or more of operating a backhoe and/or similar equipment;
* Excavating trenches below grade and around utilities;
* Field construction, reading/interpreting plans, cut sheets, etc.; and/or
* Performing preventive maintenance on equipment.
Special Requirements
CDL: Selected candidates must possess a Class B or A commercial driver's license (CDL) at time of hire. Selected applicants must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or they must provide a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information
Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must be available on a rotating basis for water main maintenance stand-by, and on a regular basis for responding to emergencies such as water main breaks and snow removal operations. Occasional overtime and ability to work alternate shifts may be required on short notice.

Clearsite Industrial Services is expanding and seeking professional Hydrovac Operators to join our business in Manassas, VA.
Hydrovac Excavation is a non-destructive method of excavating as an alternative to mechanical equipment or hand-digging. Hydrovacs use pressurized water and a vacuum system to quickly, safely, precisely and cleanly excavate around utilities, pipelines and numerous other applications.
MUST HAVE A MINIMUM CLASS “B” CDL LICENSE WITH TANKER ENDORSEMENT and CLEAN DRIVING RECORD.
Key Responsibilities
Seventy percent or more of the job's work time is spent operating the on-board hydro-vacuum system outside the truck performing non-destructive excavation around sensitive underground piping and cables.
Other Hydrovac work consists of cleaning and vacuuming, mobilization of equipment, truck maintenance, safety meetings, etc.
Heavy lifting at times is required.
Working at heights are sometimes required
The job requires typical construction type hours with some weeks being less than 40 hours and other weeks very busy requiring 50 plus hours.
Requirements
MUST HAVE A MINIMUM CLASS “B” CDL LICENSE WITH TANKER ENDORSEMENT and CLEAN DRIVING RECORD.
Minimum of 1 year driving experience with CDL

Essential Physical Functions/Requirements of the Job: Hear and distinguish emergency signals and instructions while on duty. Must be able to repetitively sit, lift, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, reach and crawl.

The ideal candidate has at least five (5) plus years of experience operating excavators in underground utility work and site development. This position plays a critical role in the safe and precise excavation for stormwater, sewer, and waterline systems.Key Responsibilities
Operate hydraulic excavators (e.g., Cat 320, 330, 336 or similar) to excavate trenches for storm, sanitary, and water mainline pipe installations.
Work closely with pipe crews and foremen to ensure proper trench depth, slope, and bedding for utilities.
Utilize GPS and/or laser-guided systems for accurate digging and grade control.
Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and utility layouts.
Perform routine daily equipment inspections, maintenance checks, and report mechanical issues promptly.
Ensure safe trenching practices in compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
Maintain clean and organized work zones and contribute to overall crew productivity.

Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years of equipment operating experience required.
Valid driver's license required.

Help Mechanics when needed.
Operate small tools Connex when needed.
Check all outside lights on buildings.
Check trash cans located in yard to see if they need to be dumped.
Check front and back parking lots for trash and materials that were left without authorization.
Walk offices in each building and check ceiling lights, carpet problems, etc.
Make sure small tools Connex is clean and organized.
Patrol street area outside yard for trash pick-up.
Unload or load any deliveries to the yard.
Weekly
Sweep yard where needed.
Mow grass, weed, trim hedges and any other yardwork necessary.
Inventory small tools Connex, lumber on Mondays so necessary stock can be approved and ordered for Thursday delivery.
Walk entire fence line looking for holes, damage or security problems.
Check all exit lights.
Wash down wash rack area and check grit holding area for available capacity and depth of water.
Clean up back yard area behind shop.
Dump smoking containers located at building entrance.
Wash a car or truck when needed.
Monthly
*The Yard Man works for the Shop Foreman and is required to meet with him daily to review any extra activities needed. The Yard Man must also inform him of his destination whenever leaving the facility.
Check, replace and clean any filters on A/C heat units.
Semi-Annually
Check caulking around window sills, entrances and other building opening and repair as needed.
Clean all windows and sills, inside and out.
