Primary Purpose PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION Works independently on complex issues and large projects. Performs overall field testing activities including installation/commissioning tests, technical investigations, field-engineering analysis on malfunctioned electrical and electronic equipment to evaluate system maintenance and repair. Reviews and evaluates Engineering construction and modification documents. Testing Group work is on transmission & distribution substation equipment. Distribution Automation work is on distribution equipment, generally outside substations. Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies. Primary Duties PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES * Dist Automation * Performs testing assignments and provides guidance to newer engineer/technician (e.g. preventive and corrective maintenance on all supervisory automation equipment installed on the distribution system). (60%) * Evaluates the effectiveness of the current distribution system design (e.g., analyze and interpret complex field data gathered from tests). (10%) * Evaluates, develops and implements new test equipment, tools and designs that have moderate financial and operational impact (5%) * Evaluates effectiveness of current technical systems and processes. Participates on teams (e.g., works with Distribution engineering and manufacturers to implement new designs) (5%) * Participates in training (e.g., attend ComEd, vendor and University classes; conduct training) (5%) * Performs engineering tasks associated with critical engineering projects or a number of small projects with many complex features. (Supports General Engineer function in DA) (15%) * Testing Group * Independently or lead employees/contractors in the commissioning of electrical systems or equipment to be placed On System. (15%) * Perform preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on distribution and transmission relays, communications equipment, power reclosers etc., using the guidelines listed in the Field Reference and the Maintenance Procedures manuals. (30%) * Conduct basic hands-on acceptance and in-service testing of transmission and distribution equipment (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, control and relay panels, SCADA, power line carrier, audio tone, etc.) Testing is performed per the guidelines included in the Field Reference Manual and the Maintenance Procedures Manuals. (15%) * Assist with the restoration of malfunctioning transmission and distribution equipment, under emergency conditions, by performing the necessary hands-on testing as outlined in the Field Reference and Maintenance Procedures manuals. (15%) * Complete required paperwork (reports, test data, blueprint corrections, relay settings, etc) as necessary to document work performed. (10%) * Provide on-the-job and formal classroom training. (15%) Job Scope JOB SCOPE Conduct CMs, PMs, and project installation testing activities on power equipment Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * A bachelor's degree in a technical field and 3 or more years of technical experience, an associate's degree and 5 or more years of technical experience, or 7 or more years of technical experience or relevant education, if non-degreed or a non-technical degree. * Successful completion of the TECH Test. (A Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university exempts the TECH Test requirement.) * Broad knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform assignments for a specific discipline for maintenance, testing, installation or service * Testing Group positions require demonstrated ability to direct crews during maintenance or commissioning of equipment or systems * Distribution Testing positions require demonstrated ability using OJE process to independently investigate and test / troubleshoot & commission distribution automation system equipment * Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills * Valid driver's license * Requires frequent travel to various company substations or other locations within the service territory * Must be available to work shifts and respond to emergency situations (7 days per week / 24 hours per day) * Knowledge of complex field test equipment. * Relevant education/experience is knowledge and/or skills that may be acquired through job experiences or education programs similar to a formal technical degree program. Relevant experience includes experience in a military role (transmission, distribution, gas, power systems, etc.), project management, journey-level electrician or gas technician, field operations, or other utility related experience, as deemed relevant to the role. Job Summary These positions will begin in May/June 2026 and will be full-time through the summer. Interns will provide engineering support to Gas Engineering staff and gas utility field personnel on gas design, construction, operating, and maintenance projects, engineering analyses, testing, and investigations, while developing engineering skills, technical expertise, interpersonal and communication skills, and project management skills. Assist staff and field project engineers and managers on a wide range of projects in natural gas transmission and distribution. Job Responsibilities * Working under the direction of an engineering mentor, assist with analyses and preparation of plans, designs, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and work procedures for projects in gas transmission and gas distribution. Examples: Review road and public works project plans for conflicts with WEC Energy Group facilities, and develop recommendations to resolve conflicts. * Analyze commercial and industrial gas load requests and recommend metering and pressure regulating equipment. * Utilize various computer programs, databases, spreadsheets, etc. to update computer models and perform network studies concerning gas system flow and capacity. Determine optimum design, costs, and economic justification of projects such as extensions of gas service to new customers or reinforcement of existing facilities to meet increasing gas loads. * Build working knowledge of natural gas transmission and distribution engineering through exposure to a variety of facilities, construction projects, system maintenance work, and projects in various stages of analysis, design, planning, and execution.
