I am the co-founder and CEO of ExplORer Surgical, the leading digital playbook for the operating room and procedure suites. ExplORer Surgical was founded at the University of Chicago in 2015 out of a research laboratory in the Department of Surgery. We have raised $10M in funding and our growing customer base of medical device companies ranges from startups to the largest global medtechs.My passion is building innovative businesses in the healthcare industry, especially those that use technology to solve inefficiencies and improve patient care. I left my job as a healthcare venture capitalist to focus on building ExplORer, but stay involved in the investing ecosystem as a Venture Partner at Portfolia and as an LP. My primary focus is on the operating room and care of surgical patients. From a clinical standpoint, I am a head and neck cancer and reconstructive surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. In addition to cancer, I also treat benign tumors of the parotid, thyroid, and neck, and have expertise in paragangliomas, parapharyngeal space tumors, Zenkers diverticulum, pharyngoceles, sialendoscopy, and minimally-invasive approaches to stones (calculi) of the parotid and submandibular glands.I am also a researcher and academic, studying “surgical transparency” - how to enhance the transfer of information into and out of the operating room for the benefit of patients, hospital staff, and the healthcare system. I directed the Operative Performance Research Institute at the University of Chicago from 2012-2015, from which I spun off ExplORer Surgical, a startup based on a groundbreaking surgical workflow app we developed in the lab. In 2015, I was recruited to Vanderbilt University, where I now direct the Surgical Analytics Lab and the Program on Surgical Ethics, and am currently developing a wearable surgical camera for use in open surgical procedures to enhance education, safety, and documentation.
