Intern, Quantum Solutions (PDEs)
Psiquantum 4.2
Palo Alto, CA jobs
PsiQuantum'smission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.
Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.
Our architecture and approachisbased on silicon photonics. Byleveragingthe advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photonsdon'tfeel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.
In 2024,PsiQuantumannounced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.
PsiQuantumalso develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.
Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. Itrepresentsa fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot besolvedany other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clearpathto make it real.
Come join us.
Job Summary:
PsiQuantum was founded in 2016 with the singular goal of building a general-purpose, fault tolerant, silicon photonic quantum computer. We have assembled a world class team of engineers and scientists who are working on the entire quantum computing stack, from hardware to applications.
We offer a competitively paid internship and industrial placement opportunity working on the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) with a fault-tolerant quantum computer (FTQC). The internship has a duration of 3-6 months with a flexible start date throughout the year. This is a remote position in Europe, preferred in Berlin, Germany (we have colleagues in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany).
Classical computers have been used for a long time to solve PDEs. However, they are reaching their limits for large-scale settings and very complex dynamics. Solving classically intractable problems with a fault-tolerant quantum computer requires new methods tailored to industrial applications. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals who want to join this exciting effort and engage in cutting-edge research to advance quantum computing as a real-world technology. As an intern, you will collaborate with world experts in fault-tolerant quantum computing for PDE solutions. You will contribute to developing practical applications for large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers in PDE and ODE problems.
The internship role requires a challenging mix of creativity, analytical skills, and knowledge of the numerical solution of linear systems, PDEs and ODEs.
Desired Qualifications
Completed a postgraduate degree in applied mathematics, physics, computer science or related areas.
Experience with numerical solution of linear systems, PDEs and ODEs.
Strong problem-solving skills.
A passion for advancing the intersection of mathematics, quantum computing, and industry applications.
Knowledge of quantum computing and algorithms is a plus.
Enjoy working in a collaborative and fast-paced team environment
Application:
If you are interested, please apply on our website at jobs
Your application should include the following information:
Current CV - Including current contact information for us to reach out to you.
Cover letter - This should be at most 1 page long and should address the following questions:
What motivates you to pursue an internship in quantum computing?
How does your most relevant experience relate to this internship?
What is your usual approach to solving scientific problems? For example:
Do you like writing code to simulate systems?
Pen-and-paper work to figure out proofs?
Analyzing and understanding data?
Using Mathematica to solve integrals?
Please also answer the following questions:
Are you currently enrolled in or have you already completed a post-graduate degree in applied mathematics, physics, computer science (or a related area)?
How many years of (non-academic) professional experience do you have in areas related to simulation by numerical solution of PDEs?
Which area of PDEs and their applications are you most interested in?
Can you commit to the full 3-6 months of internship duration?
Please provide one or more references who you feel are familiar with your potential in a research environment.
Please provide links to any of your academic or professional profiles (e.g. Google Scholar, LinkedIn, Github, ...)

Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
