What you will experience in this position:

Review the blueprint and engage with the Lead staff member to develop job criteria.
Capture necessary materials and perform layout per specifications.
Set up the welding machine and adjust settings.
Operate a welding gun to weld steel, aluminum, and other materials together.
Visually examine welds for adherence to quality standards; reweld defective joints and remove surplus slag, flux, and spatter using a brush, pad, buffer, and/or grinder.
Operate cutting torch and manual plasma cutter as needed.
Apply the weld template and inform the Lead individual or Inspector once the item is prepared for inspection.
Perform ongoing housekeeping duties to keep the work area clear of scrap and debris.
You have:
Equivalent experience to GED
Minimum of 1 year of welding experience or training
Must have or achieve welding certification
Ability to acquire forklift certification
Production welding background or a welding certification is necessary; passing a welding test is part of the interview evaluation
Ability to read a tape measure and blueprints
Proficiency in operating welding equipment

ABOUT THE POSITION
Under the direction and supervision of the Department Production Manager and in cooperation with the Production Supervisor and Production Lead, weld metal components with welding equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large mechanical products per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule.

Must inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability and clean welds to presentable state (grinding operations).
Must work with Fitters on proper assembly of equipment.
Keep work area clean and neat.

Must be able to safely use cranes and forklifts.
Must be trained in and know PPE requirements for welding including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection.

Description
At Solar's Wamego facility, welders aren't just fabricators - they're precision craftsmen shaping the future of energy. In this role, you'll gain hands-on experience with Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), using .035 wire to tack and weld parts in flat and horizontal positions. You'll also work with robotic welding systems and GTAW (TIG), expanding your capabilities through training and experience.
But welding here isn't just about joining metal - it's about building to blueprint. You'll read and interpret engineering drawings, fabricate parts to spec, and follow standard work processes in a team-focused environment. Collaboration is key, and your input matters.
You'll also be trained to operate jib and overhead cranes, manually positioning heavy fabrications in one- and two-person stalls. It's a role that blends technical skill and teamwork - all in a facility that values safety, growth, and craftsmanship.
Basic Qualifications
* Possess a welding certification or degree in welding; or a minimum of one (1) year welding experience
* Available to work from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the introductory training period
* Must be 18 years of age, or will be 18 at the time of hire
Top Candidates will also have
* Experience with MIG and TIG welding
* Ability to read blueprints
* Ability to work safely and wear all required personal protective equipment

What You Can Expect Working in the Skilled Welder Position
The Skilled Welder is responsible for the fabrication, weld, and final installation of steel components in the production of blast-resistant, modular buildings and other industrial buildings. In this role, you will be required to work with cranes, jigs, torches, plasma, hand tools and welding machines on a continual basis and to meet third-party inspection requirements under AWS and CWB compliance standards. As a Skilled Welder I, you are integral in supporting RedGuard's goal of delivering customers a quality product on time.
Responsibilities
Proficiently welds components in flat, vertical and overhead positions.
Performs daily fit up and lay out duties.
Fabricates pieces, ensuring conformance with product specifications and blueprints.
Maintains schedule and budgets for the task at hand and overall project.
Cross-trains and uses additional trade skills in multiple stages of the manufacturing process as assigned.
Follows established safety and security rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area and environment.
Minimum Qualifications
