Overview Joby Aviation is seeking an experienced Fabricator to join our subtractive prototyping team. This individual's role is to make fixtures and jigs for testing, R&D and production using precision welding tables for fixturing while collaborating with engineers and other technicians through hands-on experience. You will be responsible for the entire process of job requests from review, to setup to welding the part. A willing attitude and team collaboration are very important for this position and go a long way when thinking through a variety of solutions to complete jobs on time due to the fast paced work environment. Responsibilities Ability to shift between jobs when priorities change and communicating with co-workers. Willing to juggle multiple projects often sidelining some projects to expedite others. Operate MIG and TIG welding equipment. Proficient with use of common shop measuring tools. Operate drill presses, saws, grinders, and a variety of other manual tools and equipment. Operate manual mills and lathes. Operate CNC press brakes with manual controls. Print reading and GD&T callouts relevant to fabrication and welding. Collaborate with team members on how to best achieve end result and necessary tolerances. Demonstrates ability to document and communicate well within the team environment. Collaborate with engineers and designers, in person, by video call or phone, to provide solutions, feedback or alternative approaches to solve technical manufacturing problems with design and manufacturability in mind. Use of video conferencing and phone calls through systems such as Zoom or Teams. Use internal chat systems such as Slack. Adhere to shop procedures and safety standards at all times. Operate seated and walk behind Forklifts. Internal training provided. Required High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 3+ years experience in any relevant industry such as aerospace, motorsports, start-ups, or manufacturing shops. Minimum of 6+ years welding ferrous and non-ferrous materials, utilizing both MIG and TIG. Experience welding in any position (1F through 4f, 1G through 6G). Experience in welding a wide range of materials from aluminum, stainless and mild steels in a wide range of thicknesses from .060” up to 1”+. Willingness to work 9 hour days plus extra overtime as needed. Willingness to listen to instructions, attention to detail, work with minimal supervision. Basic understanding of job workflows and ticketing systems that utilize Kanban, Sprint or other styles of ticketing workflows. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unaided. Strong time-management skills including, how to prioritize multiple jobs, scheduling and best use of time. Ability to plan out step by step order of operations including, time estimates, sourcing materials, fixturing and setups, and post process needs. Understands basics of sheet metal bending and forming concepts. Familiarity with 5S, or similar workplace organization methods. Flexibility to work in a fast-growing environment with aggressive timelines. Willingness to train other team members. Desired ISO 9001 experience is a plus. Understanding of AWS D1.1 requirements. Laser Welding for sheet metal. Experience in welding Cryogenic components or welding exotic metals (Titanium, Chromoly, 321 Stainless Steel, 4140) a plus. Experience in sheet metal bending and forming, CNC press brake knowledge a plus. Forklift experience a plus. Jira ticketing or other Kanban related systems experience. Experience with Slack, Zoom, Teams and other relevant systems. Experience with CAD (Fusion 360, Solidworks, Catia or other). Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $39-$55/hr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.     What part will you play? The Lead Fabrication Technician (Level 4) is the senior-most technician and operational leader of Diversified's Advanced Technology Center (ATC) fabrication floor. This position serves as the primary point of coordination for all fabrication activities, overseeing daily workload distribution, assigning projects to fabrication technicians, and ensuring every system produced meets Diversified's uncompromising standards for precision, craftsmanship, and reliability. As the direct operational partner to the Senior Manager, Fabrication Services, the Fabrication Lead manages daily production flow, verifies documentation, maintains tool and equipment readiness, and collaborates closely with the Operations, Logistics & Compliance team on materials, supplies, and commissioning support. The Fabrication Lead is also responsible for reviewing and approving technician timecards and ensuring adherence to operational procedures. A critical responsibility of this position is ensuring that every project completed by the fabrication team is fully inspected by the Quality Assurance team before release. The Fabrication Lead works directly with QA to confirm that each system meets Diversified's zero-defect standard and complies with all engineering, testing, and documentation requirements. Following QA approval, the Lead ensures that the assigned technician properly kits the project, including packaging, labeling, hardware allocation, cable sets, consumables, and all field installation materials. The Lead also verifies that the complete project documentation package is included, such as engineering drawings, schematics, test reports, commissioning forms, and client-specific deliverables. In addition to managing complex, high-visibility projects, the Level 4 technician provides daily guidance, mentoring, and technical oversight to technicians at all levels. They communicate frequently with project managers, engineers, fabrication managers, and field services leaders to relay progress updates, resolve issues, clarify build requirements, and maintain alignment across all project stakeholders. The Fabrication Lead also represents the ATC during client tours, OEM visits, and partner demonstrations, modeling professionalism, technical excellence, and Diversified's brand promise, Create the Unforgettable. Lay out and mark or scribe reference lines on parts, strongback and positioner and assemble standard fabrications where sequences have been established and locate parts in positioning fixtures for welding. Trim parts to fit using burning equipment. Brace weldment to retain proper size and shape during welding. 4. Set up equipment by setting amperage, voltage, pressures, feeds and speeds within limits specified and obtaining specified electrode. 5. Preheat and maintain temperature of work as specified. 6. Operate welding equipment to deposit single and multiple layers of weld in all positions where extreme care must be exercised to produce a quality joint with uniform penetration that will withstand nondestructive testing arid machining to exacting tolerances. Clean weld between passes. 7. Repair weld all visual defects, voids and incomplete welds, remove runoff tabs and clean up ends of weld joints. This is a Union Represented position. Make proper time charge entries and record data as required. 10.
