Facing History and Ourselves was founded in 1976 by educators who believed that instilling intellectual vigor and curiosity goes hand-in-hand with teaching facts and figures.
Doctor Becton joined the staff of Facing History in 2001 after 11 years of exemplary teaching.
He was recognized nationally as a leader among educators, earning Junior Achievement’s State Teacher of the Year Award in 2005.
April joined Facing History in 2010 as an assistant in the Print Publishing department.
In 2013, April moved into the nascent digital/technology department as Web Operations Manager to manage the first major platform redesign and integration project.
Since 2014, Roger Brooks has served as President and CEO of Facing History and Ourselves, an international nonprofit educational organization that uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate.
He received their Distinguished Achievement Award in 2014.
Anne-Marie Fitzgerald joined Facing History and Ourselves as Chief Officer for Regional Operations in 2014.
In the 2014-15 school year, the organization conducted more than 375 professional development seminars, workshops, and webinars, both face-to-face and online.
She took on the role of Chief Operating Officer in 2017.
Mariel Gonzales joined Facing History and Ourselves as Chief Financial Officer in 2018.
Abby Weiss joined Facing History and Ourselves in March 2020.
Since arriving, Lara has built a team of skilled marketing and communications professionals who have raised Facing History’s public profile which in turn has driven dramatic growth in the organization’s educator network, more than doubling it, to over 300,000 educators in 2021.
