Position Summary The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Drama invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Devised Theater and Directing. We seek an artist-educator with a robust practice in devised theatre, ensemble-based creation and directing for the stage. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative theatre-maker with a demonstrated commitment to experimental processes, inclusive storytelling in the tradition of companies The Open Theatre, The Living Theatre, The Wooster Group, and others. They should be a process driven, community-building artist who values student voice, agency, and ensemble dynamics as they will be working in a conservatory, practice-based environment that emphasizes both rigor and radical imagination. This position is designed for an artist who can engage with students as creators and guide them in the development of original work, classical and contemporary directing practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Description of Responsibilities and Duties * Teach undergraduate BFA courses in devising, directing, and collaborative creation, with an emphasis on guiding 3rd- and 4th-year students through a deliberate pedagogical and curricular arc in devising work. * Advise directing thesis projects * Mentor and guide students in ensemble-based performances * Direct departmental productions and facilitate student-led creation labs or workshops * Contribute to the development in areas such as: Devised Theatre and collaboration Classical and contemporary directing practices Community engaged or site-specific performance * Maintain an active creative practice with a national and/or international visibility * Engage in service to the department and the institution in general including: student advising and committee work Required Qualifications * MFA or equivalent professional experience in directing, devised theatre, or related fields. * Significant experience creating original, collaboratively developed theatre work. * A directing portfolio that reflects a range of aesthetics, forms, and voices. * A theatre-maker who balances experimental risk-taking with craft and clarity Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching at the university level preferred, but not required. Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
