Fair Trade Certified company history timeline

1998

FLO (Fairtrade International), IFAT (WFTO), NEWS! and EFTA started to meet in 1998 and was known by their acronym - FINE. The aim of FINE is to enable these networks and their members to cooperate on important areas of work, such as advocacy and campaigning, standards and monitoring of Fair Trade.

Fair Trade USA, formally known as TransFair opened it’s first “National Headquarters” in 1998 as is now the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States.

Since Fair Trade USA began operations in 1998, cooperatives have earned over $225MM in additional income through a combination of community development premiums and better prices.

2000

In January 2000 Fairtrade bananas from Ghana, Ecuador and Windward Islands become the first to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark.

Since 2000, fair trade sales and consumer awareness have increased tremendously, as the range of fair trade organizations has also expanded.

2002

In 2002, the first World Fair Trade Day was celebrated to heighten consumer awareness and to strengthen connections among fair traders and interested citizens around the globe.

In 2002 Fairtrade International (FLO), launched the international “FairTrade” certification mark.

2004

In order to strengthen the credibility of these organisations towards political decision-makers, mainstream business and consumers, the IFAT Fair Trade Organisation Mark was launched in January 2004.

2005

In March 2005, Manchester and Salford were declared joint 100th Fairtrade Town.

But it was coffee that quickly became the main growth engine behind fair trade, claiming up to 50% of the total alternative trading organization turnover in 2005.

2006

Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation, is appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2006 New Year Honours List.

2008

According to Fairtrade International, by 2008, products certified by FLO amounted to approximately $4.98 billion worldwide, a 22% year-to-year increase.

2009

Following the sentiments of its members, IFAT underwent enormous changes starting in 2009.

The International Federation of Alternative Trade changed its name to World Fair Trade Organization during the 2009 Kathmandu Annual General Meeting (AGM). The same year, the organisation spearheaded the global celebration of World Fair Trade Day.

2010

Over 138 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified coffee were imported into the United States, a 32 percent increase over 2010.

2011

Fairtrade cotton campaign launches, including setting a new Guinness World Record for world’s longest bunting as part of a visual petition demanding trade justice for West African cotton farmers, during Fairtrade Fortnight 2011.

It was during the 2011 Mombasa AGM that WFTO members decided to have a new Fair Trade system.

2012

London 2012 commits to Fairtrade coffee, tea, sugar, wines and fruit served in the Olympic venues and athlete’s village.

2013

Two years later at the 2013 Rio AGM, members of WFTO approved the new Guarantee System (GS) after it was presented by the working group together with reports and feedback from pilot organisations that were part of the system testing.

2014

The chocolate bar is sold until 2014, and the education programme continues today.

A 2014 report out of the University of London famously shared an example of one Fair Trade tea co-operative where the modern toilets funded with the premium were exclusively for the use of senior co-op managers.

2016

The Fairtrade Foundation is honoured to announce on Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, that it is the recipient of one of the prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation 2016.

2017

Co-op teams up with Fairtrade Africa and the Compass group to partner on an innovative new gender equality programme for cocoa farmers, The Women’s School of Leadership. It launches in May of 2017.

2018

In September 2018 Fairtrade joins Global Justice Now, SumofUs and War on Want to hand in a petition with 67,027 signatures to the House of Lords, asking Peers to amend the Trade Bill to include a democratic and transparent process for negotiating our future trade deals.

2019

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2019, Fairtrade opens a pop-up hot chocolate salon named after Ivorian cocoa farmer Rosine.

2020

The information is as follows, price per USD/(lb): The current market price for coffee (04/05/2020) is $1.04, the Fairtrade Minimum Purchase Price is $1.40, the Fairtrade Premium is $1.60, the organic premium is $1.90, Producers Direct Investment is $2.13.
