Fairbanks Memorial Hospital company history timeline

1910

Beginning in about 1910, the Sisters of Charity owned and operated St Joseph’s Hospital.

1967

In June of 1967, the Sisters announced they would close St Joseph’s, and a bond proposition got started.

1968

A $1 Million pledge goal in the community was doubled by April of 1968, and in June the City gave The Hospital Foundation 25 acres of land at 16th and Cowles.

1970

The groundbreaking began for the new Fairbanks Memorial Hospital in May 1970.

1972

Thanks to a group of community volunteers and the financial contributions of many, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital opened its doors in March of 1972, debt-free and operated by LHHS.

The original laboratory, built in 1972, no longer met the needs of our growing staff and new equipment.

1991

FMH has been accredited by the Joint Commission for over 30 years, since 1991.

1992

The Women’s Center was remodeled in 1992 to create labor, delivery and recovery rooms at FMH.

1994

Denali Center was opened in 1994 to provide short- and long-term health care in a home-like setting.

1999

FMH’s operator, Lutheran Health System and Samaritan Health System merged to create Banner Health in 1999.

The Foundation built the Canter Treatment Center in 1999, and radiation therapy was offered for the first time in Fairbanks.

2003

In 2003, the new 41,176 square foot East Tower opened to house laboratory, pathology and related departments.

The FMH East Tower addition was completed in 2003.

2005

Fairbanks Imaging Center was opened in 2005, providing residents with access to state-of-the-art technology and innovative health care.

2010

2010 was an important year for heart care in Fairbanks! The opening of the Harry & Sally Porter Heart and Vascular Center consolidated cardiac care services in one location.

2011

The Center was renamed in memory of J. Michael Carroll in 2011.

2012

FMH purchases Hospice of the Tanana Valley in 2012 and expands the type of medical care that can be provided to people and caregivers who are experiencing an advance, life-limited illness.

2015

In 2015, a two-year modernization and replacement project began for a state-of-the-art surgery center, adding 90,000 square feet to the facility.

2016

FMH completed a major remodel of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 2016 to support family centered care.

2017

2017 – Foundation Health Partners begins operations in January 2017 – March – New Surgery addition opens.

Banner Health was FMH’s operator from then until January 1, 2017.

2018

The Force CT Scanner was installed at FMH in 2018.

2019

2019 – Shelley Ebenal named systems CEO for FMH, Denali Center & Tanana Valley Clinic

2020
