Job Summary Under the direction of the Medical Director, the Addiction Psychiatrist will practice with autonomy and independence within the scope of the medical license to provide direct diagnostic, preventive and treatment services to adolescents and adults with substance use disorders and serious mental illness at the MHSADS medical clinics. This position provides patient services; issues physician orders for patient care and provides patient education related to diagnoses and medication; works with staff to ensure continuity of care; consults with team leaders as needed; ensures that professional licensure is maintained; meets electronic health record (EHR) requirements; and responds to emergency and crisis situations as needed. This position will be part of an on-call schedule which responds to phone calls after hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis to ensure access 24/7 coverage for emergencies and/or consultation. This position may supervise nurse practitioners, students, interns, and externs. The Addiction Psychiatrist will: Assess patient's health by performing comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and assessments, educating patients and their families about diagnoses and medications, and providing other health information. Provides psychiatric medication services and treatment; clinically evaluates, plans, and initiates treatment services as appropriate to patients with complex medical, mental health, and substance use disorders. Submit applications for prescription assistance; ensures refills and prescription renewals are correctly processed; maintains resource information, applications, and procedures to identify available prescription funding sources; completes applications and referrals for outside funding resources; and maintains all required documentation. Support patients in working toward the outcomes described in their Individualized Service Plans and Behavior Support Plans. Ensures medical appointments are scheduled and met. Works with nursing staff to identify and address patients' needs. Provide professional advice and expertise; consults with other clinical services provided to the patient. Provide discharge planning for hospitalized patients; evaluates, plans, documents, and initiates treatment services. Participate in treatment team meetings with other members of the department, including nursing and licensed mental health professionals. May also work with external entities such schools or the juvenile detention center. Minimum Qualifications Doctor of Medicine degree; completion of residency in psychiatry or residency in addiction medicine Board Certified Addiction Psychiatrist by ABPN or Board Certified Addiction Medicine Specialist by ABPM. Must have an unencumbered Virginia Medical License; current, unrestricted DEA registration. Must be certified as an Independent Evaluator for civil commitment hearings as required per Virginia Code. Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in a government or public sector community service medical clinics. Demonstrated management and leadership skills, providing expert guidance to cross-functional medical and behavioral health treatment teams. Bilingual (Spanish-English) and multi-lingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply. Must be able to wear N-95 mask and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face shield, mask, apron, gown, gloves, etc. May be required to work and may be assigned to an alternate work site to carry out duties that support the needs of the County's residents or employees. Must be available for duty beyond normal workday as required to perform functions of position for assigned department. Must be available to report to work (including driving vehicles) during inclement weather, disasters, and emergencies. May be required to clean up contaminated areas, objects, and/or clothing as situations necessitate. May be exposed to communicable diseases. This position requires frequent intervention with persons who pose danger to self and/or others. Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
