About the Hospital: Houlton Regional Hospital (HRH) is a 25-bed critical access acute care facility located in Southern Aroostook County that was just presented with the Leapfrog organization's Top Rural Hospital award for the second year in a row. HRH was the only rural hospital in Maine to be given this award for 2022. Our hospital serves the needs of approximately 17,000 people in a wide geographic area, bordered by New Brunswick, Canada to the East. Its catchment area includes a significant geriatric population. The ED sees about 11,500 patients per year; 25-35 patient a day and is staffed with single 24-hour physician coverage with additional overnight APP coverage. There is a small increase in volume in the summer months with many vacationers enjoying various outdoor activities our great state has to offer. There is plenty of opportunity to maintain skill and competency, as we often manage critically ill patients awaiting transfer to tertiary care centers.
