POSITION SUMMARY
The Mental Health Professional is a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team and provides clinically appropriate services under the clinical direction of the Director of Mental Health. The Mental Health Professional will provide mental health screenings and assessments, clinical watches, treatment groups and individual sessions, as well as other clinically related activities.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide clinical services, including screening, assessment, treatment planning and crisis intervention.
2. Performs individual and group therapeutic counseling.
3. Performs administrative consultations for specialized social services as determined by the specific needs of the institution.
4. Interviews inmates to obtain information concerning medical history, mental health history, or other pertinent information.
5. Observes inmates to detect indications of abnormal behavior.
6. Reviews results of tests, treatment plans and treatment cases with the behavioral health team to evaluate client needs and implement treatment.
7. Coordinates psychiatry services, which includes but is not limited to tracking and triaging patients' requests or staff referrals for psychotropic meds; administrative duties for psychiatry visits; tracking psychiatry services provided including signed consents and obtaining refusals.
8. Plans and administers therapeutic treatment such as counseling, behavior modification and psychosocial education to assist inmates in managing their mental disorders and other interpersonal or environmental problems.
9. Discusses progress toward treatment goals with inmates and ensures that the treatment plan is completed in a timely manner, adhered to as the barometer for treatment and is reflected in the progress notes.
10. Consults with behavioral health team concerning treatment plan and amends plan as described
11. Assists in planning and implementing the goals and objectives of programs and projects. May direct special projects as requested.
12. Experience working effectively with a multi-disciplinary treatment team, providing clinical supervision, performing consultation and teaching others
13. Provides the necessary preparation of documentation, necessary records and reports.
14. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
15. Provides documentation in accordance with unit policies, procedures, and facility policies when recommended and/or indicated.
16. Participates in mandatory as well as elective educational activities as well as orientation of new staff, and inmate orientation.
17. Attends weekly staff meetings and follows all team/unit protocols.
18. Adheres to safety and security policies, and participates in disaster drills.
19. Follows security regulations and policies, with consideration of clinical factors.
20. Completes case management responsibilities as required.
21. Completes chart reviews as required.
22. Engages in internal audit preparation and review process as directed by the Director of Mental Health Services.
23. Appropriately recommends/offers input to multi-disciplinary team for transfers to alternate levels of care, and/or grade changes when requested.
24. Participates in all mental health watches and log entries as directed
JOB REQUIREMENTS

LICENSING: Current Nebraska Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (MHP) or Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP)
CERTIFICATION: Current CPR Certification

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF WORK

To prevent youth from being placed outside the home, CEDARS also offers Basic Center services to families who are not involved in Child Welfare or the Juvenile Justice System.

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking compassionate and committed individuals to join our team as Child and Family Services Specialists (CFSS). These professionals provide essential support to children and families through trauma-informed case management and advocacy. This work has traditionally been known as Child Protective Services. About the Role
This role can be both challenging and deeply rewarding. As a CFSS, you will support families involved with the child welfare system, primarily due to concerns of abuse and/or neglect. You will assess safety, work collaboratively with families and community partners, and promote permanency and well-being for children. You will frequently travel to and meet with families in their homes, attend community meetings, participate in multidisciplinary team discussions, and be involved in legal proceedings, including providing court testimony when necessary.
Salary:
Trainee starts at $21.836 with an increase to $25.607 after successful completion of training.

Work Schedule & Flexibility

Following the completion of training, flexible work hours are available. Evening hours may be necessary to accommodate the needs of assigned families. This position also requires participation in an on-call rotation, which includes weeknights, weekends, and holidays.
Work Environment & Expectations
As a CFSS, you will sometimes enter homes that are in poor or unsanitary conditions and may encounter emotionally difficult situations. Worker safety is a top priority, and training and protocols are in place to prepare and support staff in the field.
You must be able to engage effectively with children and adults from diverse backgrounds, including those experiencing crisis, trauma, or instability. In some situations, you may be required to care for children temporarily while coordinating their transition to safe and appropriate placements.
While the work can be demanding, you will never be doing it alone. Ongoing supervision, training, peer support, and collaboration with law enforcement and legal partners help ensure both staff safety and effective outcomes for families.

Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, human development, mental health care, education, criminal justice, or other related fields. Consideration will be given to applicants who are enrolled in the final semester of their bachelor's degree. Promotion to a Child and Family Services Specialist is contingent on successfully completing degree requirements and required training.

The Behavioral Health & Wellness Center at Children's Nebraska will be a world-class facility providing the full spectrum of pediatric behavioral and mental health services for children and their families. Located on our main hospital campus to provide a convenient continuum of care, the center will offer a crisis assessment center, behavioral health urgent care, 40 single-occupancy inpatient beds, a partial hospitalization program and outpatient services - all guided by our innovative, trauma-informed model of care.
A Brief Overview
Provide a therapeutic, educational, and recreational program for patients. Plans and implements developmentally appropriate activities which promote normal growth and development, in conjunction with supporting the psycho-social needs of the patients and their families throughout the course of their testing/treatment or hospitalization. Hours in keeping with typical patient need in assigned area as approved by supervisor.
Essential Functions
Provides preparation and support to patients undergoing medical procedures and treatments through pre-procedural teaching and assesses coping skills and adjustment to hospitalization, surgery and/or chronic illness on a daily basis.
Uses formal and informal assessment techniques to accurately determine patient's developmental and emotional states.
Uses developmentally appropriate and medically accurate teaching aids and techniques to increase knowledge and support emotional needs.
Advocates for the needs of patients and families by communicating important information with the appropriate health care professionals.
Writes concise, objective, and accurate clinical notes, documenting pertinent information in a timely manner.
Facilitates interaction with patients, siblings, and parents.
Recognizes and addresses the importance of therapeutic play in facilitating child's mastery of and coping with the health care experience.
Incorporates family's involvement into their child's care, identifies family needs and views.
Communicates with patients and families using theories of human growth and development, family systems and cultural background.
Actively advocates patient needs to medical team members and ancillary services. Seeks appropriate/alternative approaches to care which may minimize the impact of the healthcare experience.
Communicates concisely with other professionals, integrating theory and evidence based practice to obtain and share pertinent information.
Demonstrates respect for the viewpoints of other professionals.
Coordinates child life services with families and professionals.
