Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical and HIV Services, the HIV Advocate plays a vital role in helping reduce the transmission of HIV and STIs in our community. Our program follows the Harm Reduction model, which calls for the non-judgmental, non-coercive provision of services and resources to people who use drugs and the communities in which they live in order to assist them in reducing attendant harm. They will conduct HIV tests, STI screenings, and counseling. The HIV Advocate will ensure newly diagnosed HIV+ individuals are referred and linked to medical services. Other duties include maintaining confidentiality of participants, reviewing and completing data collection forms, compiling data for monthly reports, and helping co-workers with any other duties assigned. With a focus on the reduction of stigma, the HIV Advocate interfaces with the community to educate them on HIV/AIDS through individual and/or group sessions, Center-related programs, services, and events. The HIV Advocate provides non-medical case management and case coordination to HIV positive patients to assist them in navigating services. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct rapid HIV testing, rapid HCV testing, and pregnancy testing. Perform tests at off-site locations; educate the public to provide risk reduction training; give speeches and informative talks to various small groups. Work as part of an interdisciplinary team with the Director of Clinical and HIV Services and other team members to increase awareness on what resources are available for the HIV positive community and update the resource card to distribute via safer sex kits when HIV positive individuals collect their medication. Assist with recruitment and retention of clients, particularly those who are disconnected from care and services. Work closely with the Director of Clinical and HIV Services to provide education/training on harm reduction, safer sex messages, and cultural sensitivity related to the HIV-positive and the LGBTQ communities with HIV/AIDS, who are not in care, to connect them to services and support groups. Two years of experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree. Candidates with lived experience within HIV care and prevention, and or with substance use treatment or harm reduction are encouraged to apply. Communicate with appropriate individuals regarding the youth. Ensure that each assigned participant is participating in an appropriate education/vocational program. Ensure that the participant attends school and/or work on a regular basis Ensure that the participant has access to homework assistance and tutoring as needed. Take each participant to places of interest and introduce them to new activities and new ways of doing things. Ensure that activities coincide with the needs, interests, and wants of the participant and family as defined by the service plan and the Program Director. Be prepared to identify the family's changing needs and interests as the advocacy relationship progresses. Make necessary arrangements to acquire medical assistance coverage for eligible participants. Be aware of each participant's medical history, prescribed medications, disabilities and needs. Monitor the participant's nutritional needs and general health status. Assist each participant and family in identifying resources or people who can provide continued support beyond termination of advocacy services and develop linkages to those community resources and persons. Respond to emergency situations or special incidents by involving the participant or the participant's family as the need arises. Attend court hearings or other meetings as required. Plan appropriate group activities with assigned youth (if relevant). Engage the youth's family in services. This means addressing their concrete needs, supporting their relationship with their youth, advocating with them and/or on their behalf, and providing coaching, modeling, and general support. Attend and participate in staff activities. Attend weekly supervision sessions. Attend monthly staff meetings. Participate in other program activities as requested. Ensure all internal and external training is completed in a timely manner. Staff are required to meet the minimum training requirement set by the agency, state, and or local government. Complete YAP's Basic Advocacy Training Curriculum and other required training courses within defined timelines. Attend other ongoing training courses as required or by interest and within adherence to YAP's policies under the guidance and direction of the staff Supervisor. Ensure there is meeting/verbal communication at least weekly with program leadership that addresses both clinical and administrative elements of the work and builds an atmosphere of accountability and engagement. TIME COMMITMENT The Discovery Children's Museum YouthWorks internship program is for six months and may be extended for an additional six months. All incoming interns are part-time working alternating weekends (one on, one off). An extended Intern status (work every weekend during the academic year) is optional after 30 days. During the academic year, interns must be available to work Saturdays from 9:45 to 5:00 and Sundays from 11:45 to 5:00, at least every other weekend. Departure time is dependent on completing gallery closing procedures. During summer, winter, and spring breaks (and certain holidays), interns must be willing to work a “ flexible schedule.”. During these time frames, interns will attend a team meeting and/or workshop at least once a month, either in person or virtual. These meetings are mandatory. Interns may also be scheduled for work member exhibition preview events and VIP Parties. These work assignments may be scheduled earlier or later than the standard operating hours. Preplanned family trips or other extended time off during the first 60 days of your internship must be discussed and approved upon accepting the internship.
