Pros of working at Family Video

Tasks are clearly defined, customers are friendly, and there is freedom to make mistakes and learn from them.

Cons of working at Family Video

Since it's a DVD/Blu-Ray rental company, it doesn't make THAT much money and therefore the pay could be higher there.

Family Video benefits

Free movie rentals before they hit the shelves, aka "pre-streeting"

Pros of working at Family Video

Interacting with the customers and the ability to set my own pace during my shifts.

Cons of working at Family Video

No lunch breaks. Even on the busiest of nights, there is only one person usually working at any given store. Very few hours possible especially for those who do not meet their sales goals.

Family Video benefits

Free rentals if you meet your sales goals.

Current FV employee here. Everything wondercopter said is pretty dead on(especially about staying in business). It's a great place to work if you're just trying to make some money and enjoy the workday. It's never stressful, and chances are your coworkers are going to be decent people (they hire based heavily on friendliness). Payroll is the only downside, but as a college student I've found it to be worth it

Sounds like it might just be exactly what I'm looking for. I'm giving my current job through the holidays, and see how I feel once things get settled back down.

I worked at Family Video for 5 years. I met some of my best friends there. Family Video will not be going out of business they have an extremely smart business model. THey own all the property they have and lease it to themselves. Surpisingly revenue is not bad, atleast whn I was last there in July. They are in a legal battle right now for not paying employees properly. Some examples if you close at nite (which every store stays open til MIDNITE EVERYDAY. YES x-mas YES new years) after your shift you have to go to the bank and drop off money and not get paid for it. there are absolutely NO BREAKS. unless you are a district manager you are not gonna make a lot of money. I was promoted to store manager and made decent money but I couldn't take the treatment. you work a crapload of hours and are salaried UNDER 30,000 to save money for the store. I should have stayed a regular full-timer cuz its actually a really fun job.. again, if you love movies.

also, since the legal battle started, you now get paid for going to the bank. but still no breaks.. the managers try to schedule you just under the amount of hours that legally require a break. but.. some managers dont pay any attention to that and give you some ridiculous shpleel about why you dont get a break.
