  • Prioritizes product quality control. Coordinates all necessary pre-harvest, production activities such as chemical applications, mowing and irrigation requirements with Sod Farm Superintendent. Coordinates with sod harvest foreman and assists with harvesting, loading, deliveries, logistics, and customer relations. Closely monitors labor, equipment and material costs related to the harvest operation. Becomes familiar with operating the FireFly harvester.
  • Assists Sod Farm Superintendent in the prioritization of sod production best management practices (BMP's). Such practices will include the continued implementation of the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services (FDACS) sod industry criteria. Existing and future technology such as precision control spray equipment and GPS will be a primary focus in this setting. Obtains Private Applicator's license within 90 days of hire date. Duda Sod to cover expense of training and licensing.
  • Carefully reviews harvest crew payroll before submittal to administrative team on a daily basis. Ensures that FireFly Harvester Matrix reports and safety meeting forms are completed in a timely manner. Administers employee performance reviews and development goals for direct reports.
  • Ensures that harvest employee safety is a top priority. Engages harvest personnel in meaningful safety meetings on a monthly basis. Obtains employee feedback and implements continued improvements to company safety protocols.

University of Florida farm supervisor job description

This position will serve directly under and report to the Academic Programs Specialist/Farm Manager. The Farm Supervisor will be responsible for assisting the Farm Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Equine Sciences Center and Horse Teaching Unit and working directly with the farm crews. This individual will be key in decision making when the Farm Manager is unavailable. Both the manager and supervisor will work closely together to plan improvement projects and help both units support the teaching, research and extension functions of the department. The Farm Supervisor will have a general understanding of the farm budget to help monitor farm expenditures on a weekly basis. It is expected that this individual will have a strong background in equine reproduction and will participate with the CVM and the Farm Manager to ensure that the breeding program is optimized.
Essential functions of the position include:

* Organize, direct, and directly participate with farm personnel in the daily care and maintenance of the Center's animals, facilities and grounds.
* Supervises and maintains proper farm safety and sanitary conditions in accordance with the Division of Environmental Health and Safety/Occupational and Research Safety.
* Work with the Farm Manager to breed mares and manage the foal crop.
* Work with the Farm Manager to liaise with IFAS Facilities Planning and Operations on the maintenance and renovation of the Center's facilities.
* Assist with the unit's forage production

Normal Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday 7:00am until 4:00pm or 8:00am until 5:00pm. Some nights and weekends will be required. Employee will be asked to adjust schedule to meet operational requirements. This is an essential position.

Expected Salary:

$44,000 to $46,000 annually

This is a full time staff position that comes with a full benefits package . If eligible, employees can also receive tuition assistance through the Employee Education Program.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience working on an agricultural operation, including supervision of others. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required years of experience.
