1915

In 1915, 59,000 co-op members spent $12 million on co-op supplies, but that only accounted for less than one percent of the total spending on farm purchases.

1919

By 1919, when the Bureau of Census did a survey that broke down purchases and sales by cooperatives, it found tremendous increases.

1920

In the United States a co-operative association was founded by 1920.

In 1920 there were 2,600 consumer co-ops in the United States—all but 11 were general stores—and 80 percent were in towns with populations of less than 2,500.

1922

In 1922, the Capper-Volstead Act exempted cooperative marketing organizations from anti-trust legislation.

1925

By 1925 the American Institute of Cooperation, which advocated for education about cooperatives, had been organized.

1926

In 1926, Congress passed a law requiring the secretary of agriculture to create a Division of Cooperative Marketing under the USDA's Bureau of Agricultural Economics.

1936

In 1936, farmers were making 20 percent of their purchases through co-ops, spending over $250 million.

1950

By 1950, fully a third, 33 percent, of farm purchases were through co-ops.

1995

A citizen’s group began operating wind turbines and involving broad community ownership in the U.K. by 1995.

2006

Member companies employed almost 80,000 people and the Modragon group of companies was the seventh largest in Spain in 2006.

2008

Co-operative banks have become very successful throughout Europe, and were able to respond more effectively than most corporate banks during the 2008 mortgage-securities crisis.
