Farnsworth Group is seeking a Surveying Technician I in the below posting location for, hire between now and May 2026. In this role, the Survey Technician works primarily as an entry-level member of a Land Surveying Field Crew to complete various activities in the field associated with mapping the earth's surface for transportation, energy, land development, oil & gas, and construction-related projects.

Job Activities:
* Operates, cleans & maintains surveying equipment as directed.
* Prepares clear, concise, and accurate field notes and sketches.
* Collects, processes, and downloads surveying field data.
* Maintains surveying gear and company vehicles.
* Follows FGI Safety Protocols and completes daily Job Safety Assessments (JSA)
* Familiar with traffic control operations based on field activities.
* Communicates with field staff, CAD Technicians, and project managers on a daily basis.
* Familiar with basic surveying principles such as leveling, traversing, public land surveys, metes & bounds, boundary surveys, and topographic mapping
* Interprets & extracts data from engineering plans & surveying documents.
* Uses math formulas, calculators and data collectors to determine positional information.
Specific Requirements include:
* Valid US driver's license & good driving record
* High School diploma or equivalent
* Ability to operate in a mentor / mentee Team atmosphere
* Ability to understand and operate current & new technology
* Safety oriented
* Basic math skills, including trigonometry, geometry, and algebra.
* Ability to Travel (approximately 80%)
Desired Qualifications Include:
* 0 - 2 years previous surveying experience
* Familiar with Trimble Surveying Instruments
* Previous safety training (OSHA, First-Aid)
* CST1 (certified survey technician level 1) certification
* Familiar with Metes & Bounds or the Public Land Survey System (PLSS)
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
* Primarily a field position, working outside on projects of varying conditions.
* Ability to work in various terrain & weather conditions and recognize safety hazards.
* Requires lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing, climbing, pushing, pulling, hammering, digging, and other physical activities
* Requires the ability to safely operate and drive company vehicles.
* Requires the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

You Have:
• B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (Required)
• Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) License (Required)

• A Valid Driver's License (Required)
• 10 -12 years of related experience in construction management, including but not limited to, roadway, bridge, drainage, utility relocation, lighting, maintenance of traffic during day and night construction activities
• A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Resident Engineer on IDOT and/or ISTHA projects
• Experience in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Microsoft Schedule and other related Windows-based software, preferably

The Project Manager is responsible for all aspects of Transportation Engineering project delivery including contracts, budget, schedule, design production, quality and client communications. They are also responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of team members to achieve project objectives.
Essential Functions
Manages the day-to-day activities for projects of varying complexity and works with the major stakeholders for the project that will influence its progress and cost

Leads resolution of construction related issues, disputes, and disagreements

Summary/Objective:
Under general supervision, performs on-site construction engineering work requiring the application of standard techniques, methods, and procedures gained through construction engineering experience. Responsible for construction and materials inspection tasks for assigned projects and may work on non-routine and increasingly complex assignments. Monitors and documents progress and helps ensure adherence to contract and subcontract terms, performance, quality requirements, and engineering specifications. Works closely with the construction team and other staff to coordinate and complete work.
Essential Functions
Assist in administering portions of the contract and may prepare change orders
Participate in arranging job progress meetings, material testing, and construction inspections
Accurately interpret contract drawings, standard drawings, and specifications
Measure, document, and calculate quantities of project work performed
Coordinate the interface between design and field construction and inspection work
Conduct work with minimal supervision, exercising good engineering judgment and initiative
Identify, report, and document construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents
Resolve field coordination issues and bring larger concerns to the attention of the resident engineer, contractor, or other individual in charge of the site
Identify deviations from plans and specifications and offer ideas for resolving
Produce accurate technical reports to document daily construction inspection activities
Review and monitor work for Quality Assurance/Quality Control purposes and course correct when applicable
Monitor street and utility projects for compliance with traffic, survey, or construction activities
Be present on-site when required by contractor(s) and/or project manager
Observe and demonstrate all construction safety protocols; communicate concerns with the resident engineer, contractor, or supervisor
Develop and maintain collaborative and trusted relationships with multidisciplinary teams
Mentor and delegate work to less experienced members of the construction team
Perform other duties as required
Education/Experience
B.S. in civil engineering or related field (ABET/EAC-accredited program)
4+ years of applicable experience
PE Required (or working towards licensure in the next 6-12 months)
IDOT Documentation Certification and OSHA 30 required, or obtained within 6 months of hire
Valid driver's license required

Demonstrates ability to successfully engage with professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment, communicate with team members; build relationships and trust
Exercises sound engineering judgement
Skilled in preparing reports, cost estimates, schedules, and quantity take offs

Summary/Objective:
Under general supervision, performs on-site construction engineering work requiring the application of standard techniques, methods, and procedures gained through construction engineering experience. Responsible for construction and materials inspection tasks for assigned projects and may work on non-routine and increasingly complex assignments. Monitors and documents progress and helps ensure adherence to contract and subcontract terms, performance, quality requirements, and engineering specifications. Essential Functions
Assist in administering portions of the contract and may prepare change orders
Participate in arranging job progress meetings, material testing, and construction inspections
Accurately interpret contract drawings, standard drawings, and specifications
Measure, document, and calculate quantities of project work performed
Coordinate the interface between design and field construction and inspection work
Conduct work with minimal supervision, exercising good engineering judgment and initiative
Identify, report, and document construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents
Resolve field coordination issues and bring larger concerns to the attention of the resident engineer, contractor, or other individual in charge of the site
Identify deviations from plans and specifications and offer ideas for resolving
Produce accurate technical reports to document daily construction inspection activities
Review and monitor work for Quality Assurance/Quality Control purposes and course correct when applicable
Monitor street and utility projects for compliance with traffic, survey, or construction activities
Be present on-site when required by contractor(s) and/or project manager

Education/Experience

4+ years of applicable experience

Summary/Objective
Responsible for the design and preparation of plans, details, construction budgets, code compliance, design calculations, and specifications for assigned projects. Responsible for implementation of Quality Control - Quality Assurance practices for the project. Work and coordinate with other staff as needed to meet project requirements.
Essential Functions
Oversees the completion of various engineering tasks for transportation engineering projects, which may include state, county, or municipal public roadway improvements, or engineering work related to private developments or private utilities affecting the public right-of-way. This may include delegating to, training, and working with our engineering staff to complete project tasks. Experience with IDOT policies and permitting procedures is beneficial.
Interfaces with various disciplines to ensure design process is coordinated, complete and comprehensive
Establishes appropriate and applicable design criteria, develops design concepts/alternatives, studies, project budgets, project schedules, and recommends solutions
Advises on and/or performs analysis and design calculations, documents design procedures, and assures design follows codes and standards
Prepares the project deliverables including plans, specifications, reports, and construction cost and time estimates
Collaborates with a team to prepares proposals for new work
Develops project scope, schedule and budget in collaboration with the Project Manager
Monitors projects to assure maintenance of schedule and budget, and that the design is consistent with project criteria and scope of work
Recognizes scope creep and brings to the attention of the Project Manager
Provides training to other staff
Coordinates permit requirements and obtains the necessary permits
Performs field investigations and condition evaluations as assigned
Represents the firm at business development events and conferences

Education/Experience/Skills
B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering or related fields
8+ years of transportation engineering experience
PE licensure is required

Good oral and written communication skills
Ability to write reports with clarity
Collaborates with others well, can delegate work effectively, and can train coworkers in technical tasks
Has experience with roadway design elements, including geometric design, drainage design, traffic operations, traffic signal design, guardrail design, and/or water main design.
