    Job DescriptionTHE CITY OF PORTALES, NEW MEXICO POSTING #2025-027 POLICE SERVICE AIDE DEPARTMENT: POLICE STATUS: NON-EXEMPT REPORTS TO: INVESTIGATIONS SERGEANT AND/OR POLICE LIEUTENANT SHIFT: FT REGULAR / 40 HOURS PER WEEK SALARY: $13.48 HOURLY/ $28,038.40 ANNUALLY GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Investigations Sergeant and/or Police Lieutenant, the Police Service Aide performs numerous and varied duties involved with the maintenance of extensive records, reports, and files along with non-sworn, non-emergency law enforcement duties and a variety of community service activities in support of police activities. Work involves typing various documents and filing appropriately. Working with numerous and varied confidential documents and reports, this position requires a high level of discretion relative to information received and disseminated. The position may require various fieldwork in support of basic police operations and functions when requested to support patrol officers in the field. TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Although the following are typical of the tasks and responsibilities routinely performed, additional duties and/or responsibilities requiring comparable or lesser skills, knowledge or dexterity may be assigned. Type, process and file numerous, varied reports and records. Enter and maintain records on computer. Make photocopies of documents as needed by various personnel and agencies. Maintain various logs of citations, arrests, and photographs. Deliver reports to the courts on a regular basis. Compile and prepare statistical information relative to accidents and criminal activity. Answer correspondence as directed. Turn in money received each month. Must be able to deal with the public in a courteous manner, sometimes under stressful conditions. Answer the telephone in a professional manner taking accurate messages as needed. Perform related duties as assigned by supervisors. Operate a police radio to maintain communication with the department when necessary. Respond to assist patrol officers with traffic control when needed. Complete reports for citizens as requested and as needed at the department and other needed locations. Operate a motor vehicle equipped with emergency warning lights. Record and process property. Move mobile radar trailers with the assistance of others and by use of departmental vehicle. Perform other non-emergency law enforcement duties as designated by a supervisor. KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS: High school diploma or GED required, associate or bachelor's degree preferred. Must have a valid New Mexico driver's license. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, other agencies, and the general public using tact, courtesy, and good judgment. Physically perform essential functions of the job. Must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a good reputation and background, which will withstand pre-appointment investigation. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT Work involves exposure to potentially hazardous, uncontrollable, and life-threatening situations. There is frequent need to walk, run, lift, and climb. The City of Portales promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of random drug testing. WORK SCHEDULE : The regular workweek is 8 hours a day for 5 days a week, subject to callback, weekends, and holidays, as necessary. Additional time may be required after regular hours.     This is a casual position working on an as needed basis to complete the weekly schedule. If there are shifts available, this position must work at least one shift every two (2) months. The lifeguard performs specialized work in the enforcement of regulations and the protection of life at the swimming pool. This position is responsible for maintaining reasonable state of discipline and behavior on the part of swimmers and rescuing those who might be in distress. Instructions and preliminary training are given at the beginning of the season, after which, employee is expected to follow the established procedures with minimum assistance. Work is subject to review through visual inspections by a Supervisor who is generally at the pool at all times. This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. * Patrols and observes swimming pool area; prevents ball playing, tag games, fighting, and other infractions of rules around the pool area * Rescues tired bathers or bathers having difficulties, applies artificial respiration if necessary * Administers first aide to cuts and other injuries suffered by bathers and administers CPR when necessary * Assists in sweeping, mopping, and picking up of wastepaper and trash in the pool area and buildings * Ensures pool rescue equipment, benches, and other movable equipment are kept in proper area * May assist in checking of the temperature of water and amounts of chlorine, bromide, and acid in the water * Assists in working behind counter, checking baskets and valuables * May be required to work weekends and holidays. * Skill in swimming, rescue work, resuscitation, and in giving first aide. * Ability to recognize emergencies and to take appropriate action. * Good physical strength and sufficient strength to control struggling adult swimmers. * Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, Community First Aid and CPR, and AED Certification. * A background check, as well as other additional pre-employment screening must be completed prior to start date.
