The firm’s origins in Vancouver began in 1889 when Joe Russell joined a Victoria-based firm to run its new Vancouver office on Cordova Street, forming Yates, Jay & Russell.
In 1929, Len and Theo DuMoulin joined the firm which formally became known as Russell & DuMoulin.
In late 1999 Toronto-based Fasken Campbell Godfrey and Quebec-based Martineau Walker (Montreal and Quebec City) joined to form Fasken Martineau.
After a merger with major firms from Toronto and Montreal in 2000, the firm became known as Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP.
In May 2003 Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP opened a "greenfield" office in Calgary, Alberta.
In February 2007 Fasken Martineau Dumoulin LLP merged with London-based Stringer Saul LLP to create the first full-service integrated Canadian-UK law firm.
On October 22, 2012, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP announced that it would merge with South African firm Bell Dewar, in what is seen as the latest corporate alliance to be based on a mutual interest in extractive commodities.
