Faulkner State Community College company history timeline

1942

Faulkner University has been a part of Montgomery, Alabama since 1942 when Doctor Rex Turner, Doctor Leonard Johnson and Joe Greer established Montgomery Bible College on a few acres on Ann Street.

1947

In 1947, Doctor Faulkner partnered with Bill Stewart to purchase the Monroe Journal from A. C. Lee, Harper Lee’s father.

1953

Over the years, the school continued to grow. It was renamed Alabama Christian College in 1953, and 11 years later the present property on the Atlanta Highway was purchased.

1964

The Escambia County Board of Commissioners purchased 65 acres from the heirs of John M. Holladay on January 6, 1964, for $45,745.

1966

For the first few months of operation, it was called Bay Minette State Junior College, but in early 1966, the Board of Trustees named the College William Lowndes Yancey State Junior College in honor of a pre-Civil War statesman and educator.

1975

The Jackson Center of Coastal Alabama was established in 1975 and is located on the campus of Jackson High School.

In 1975, the college opened extended campuses in Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile.

1977

The Gilbertown Center of Coastal Alabama was established in 1977 and offers a wide range of day and evening classes.

1983

The Thomas Goode Jones School of Law was acquired in 1983, and a year later the college was accredited as a four-year university.

1985

In 1985, the college was renamed Faulkner University in honor of businessman and longtime supporter, trustee and chairman of the board, Doctor James Faulkner of Bay Minette, Ala.

1987

In 1987, the present Fairhope site was acquired.

1990

The former Jefferson Davis Community College was formed through the consolidation of Jefferson Davis State Junior College and Atmore State Technical College by action of the State Board of Education on December 13, 1990.

1991

The former Alabama Southern Community College was created in 1991 by the merger of two existing colleges in Monroeville and Thomasville.
