The first mention of a public high school is found in official records dated March 20, 1856.
By 1908, it was obvious the community needed a larger building for its growing high school student population.
Documents will be preserved and things like classroom blackboards will be incorporated into the loft-style apartments he plans for the 1909 school.
That school, named Chambersburg High School, was built in 1909 at a cost of $57,957.
Once the demolition phase is complete, McKissick plans to renovate the historic 1909 building first, turning it into 23 apartments, many of them with lofts made possible by the extremely high ceilings in that building.
In this photo, the side of the 1909 structure stands behind the right half of the windowed classroom wing.
By 1918, enrollment at the new high school had grown so much that the district had to go to half-day sessions to accommodate all students.
When Chambersburg Area Senior High School was built in 1954, the school at Queen and Third became Chambersburg Area Junior High School.
When the Chambersburg Area Middle School was built in 1972, seventh-graders from both Central and Faust junior high schools were moved to CAMS.
By 1982, the district closed the top two floors and students used only the first floor for classes.
The developer expects restoration of the original building into loft-style apartments to be complete in 2017
