Responsibilities
Perform basic and advanced diagnostic sleep studies.
Prepare patient and equipment for ordered testing.
Interview patient to determine sleep disorder issues and to explain testing procedures.
Perform and document testing.
Monitor patient throughout testing and intervene as necessary to resolve patient needs or equipment issues.
Collect, analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs; score, interpret and report results of sleep studies.
Prepare, calibrate, repair and maintain equipment required for testing.
Determine and report needed repairs/replacements.
Requirements
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
One or more of the following required:
Certified Polysomnographic Technician credentialed from the Board of Registered Polysomnograhic Technologists (BRPT) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
Respiratory Care Practitioner obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
Respiratory Therapist specializing in Registered credentialed from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
Registered Polysomnographic Technologist credentialed from the Board of Registered Polysomnograhic Technologists (BRPT) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
Sleep Technician credentialed from the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
Education:
High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.

Job Summary

Accurately performs basic to complex clinical laboratory tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment in addition to established protocol, techniques and equipment manuals.
Assumes responsibility for distinguishing between normal and abnormal clinical laboratory parameters and takes actions to assure all abnormals are rechecked. Alerts appropriate staff for abnormal results and documents these actions.

Job Summary
Provide technical assistance in the laboratories. Performs laboratory duties to assist technologists, technicians, pathologists' assistants and/or pathologists. Handles related equipment including maintenance; cleans work area and stocks supplies. As needed, will assist in reference lab work including packaging, mailing, tracking, and report filing. Expected to train and onboard new employees. Pathology Technicians within the Histology/Gross Laboratory will assist in obtaining biological samples for study and prepares tissues for processing and examination under the direction and supervision of pathologists. May perform complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis.
Within the Clinical Laboratory setting, responsibilities include collecting, preparing and processing specimens. Assists in performing laboratory activities and other assigned tasks. Aids in preparing laboratory specimens and supplies. May be responsible for entering laboratory orders and results. Ensures the accuracy and quality of laboratory data in a safe and professional work environment. May be required to perform waived tests and/or phlebotomy.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology or other related field that includes 30 combined semester hours of biological science and chemistry.
One year previous laboratory experience preferred.

Position Highlights

A Brief Overview Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests, procedures and related duties. Utilizes scientific principles as well as technical, procedural, and problem-solving aptitudes for day-to-day laboratory technical operations, quality control, quality assurance, procedure/instrument maintenance and corrective action, test result correlation, and clinical laboratory related continuing education. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of laboratory instrumentation or disciplines including but not limited to: supply inventory, quality control, calibration, reagent preparation, etc.
Initiates and follows through with corrective action, utilizing MLS and/or supervisory assistance as necessary; prioritizes and manages effective workflow.
Accurately performs basic to complex clinical laboratory testing following established procedure, protocol, techniques and/or manufacturer guidelines.
Communicates laboratory data and pertinent technical information to appropriate departments, healthcare providers, and individuals in an accurate and timely fashion. Includes verbal as well as electronic means.
Critiques, correlates and differentiates results of testing utilizing theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, and independent judgment; seeks MLS and/or supervisory resources as necessary.
Assesses the validity of results which appear usual, or which may differ significantly from previous results or expected values and take appropriate corrective action as necessary with assistance from MLS and/or supervisor as needed.
Participates in established lab CQI or other laboratory activities as assigned.
Provides instructions on proper pre-analytical specimen collection, specimen handing, and storage guidelines for various body fluids and/or may collect specimens as necessary.
