Faygo Beverages company history timeline

1907

Faygo was founded in Detroit, Michigan, in November 1907, as Feigenson Brothers Bottle Works by Russian baker immigrants Ben and Perry Feigenson.

1912

Twenty years later, the company had nearly 100 employees. For example, before the Feigenson Brothers bought their first GMC truck in 1912, the duo dispensed their bubbly pop from horse and carriage.

1920

The brothers formed the Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works, and in 1920 changed the name to Feigenson Brothers Company.

After the brothers opened a new bottling plant on Beaubien Street and Erskine, a black-and-white photo from 1920 shows seven men at work, barrels of pop are scattered about and an assembly line cuts down the middle of the factory.

1921

In a clever marketing move, “Faygo” was adopted as the brand name in 1921.

In 1921 as the company expanded, they decided the brand name "Feigenson Brothers" was too long and changed it to Faygo.

1922

The brothers bought their first delivery truck in 1922, and started home deliveries the following year.

1923

The Feigenson brothers also purchased their first delivery truck and began to make home deliveries in 1923.

1935

They moved their growing bottle works to Gratiot Avenue in 1935, where Faygo pop is still created today.

1954

Shasta had been the first company to put soft drinks in cans, which it pioneered in 1954.

1956

In 1956, the company created a series of radio and television advertisements featuring a fictional cowboy called the Faygo Kid, who was portrayed in animation for television commercials for Faygo Old-Fashioned Root Beer.

1961

In 1961, the Royal Line was launched as a premium product line.

1965

Faygo began advertising its products on broadcasts of Detroit Tigers baseball games in 1965.

1985

In 1985, the Feigenson family sold the Faygo Beverage Inc. to National Beverage Company, based in Florida.

1986

TreeSweet Products Corp. bought the company from the Feigenson family in early 1986 for $105 million.

1987

TreeSweet in turn sold the company to National Beverage Corp. a year later in 1987.

1996

Faygo expanded in 1996 with a non-carbonated drink line, Ohana, which included punches, iced tea and lemonade.

1997

The following year, 1997, marked Faygo's 90th anniversary, and the company published a special recipe book in celebration that included dishes that used Faygo sodas as ingredients.

1998

In 1998 Faygo introduced a web site that offered its beverages for sale by mail to homesick midwesterners.

2001

In the summer of 2001 a line of retro-styled 16 ounce glass-bottled sodas was also introduced.

Faygo's logo and packaging were redesigned in 2001 for the second time in a decade.

2007

In 2007, Faygo celebrated its 100th anniversary with a new flavor and contests for label design.

2014

In March 2014, the company introduced its ginger ale, Faygo Gold, rivaling cross town company Vernors' flagship drink.
