Graduation from high school or GED and 2 years of experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment. Special Requirements: Must possess a valid State of Florida issued Class "A" Commercial Driver's License and have an acceptable safe driving record and maintain an acceptable driving record. Code 1: Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency. On an incident by incident basis, the employee's Department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work. Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in the operation of motorized heavy equipment. Work involves operating heavy equipment such as Slope Mower, Bush hog, Ditcher, Buzz Bar, Shredder, Backhoe, Loader, Paver Box, Mini (Compact) Track hoe/ Mini (Compact) Excavator Box Blade, Dozer (rough grading), Skid Steer, boring machine, and all equipment listed under the Maintenance Worker classification, including driving dump trucks. Work also includes loading trucks, assisting in road repair work, maintenance and construction of water and wastewater lines, digging and covering trenches, patching roads and sidewalks, installing culverts, trash and recycle cart pick up, trash pick-up along Right of Ways, as needed. Employee is also responsible for policing work sites, and performing minor preventive maintenance on equipment. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks. Reports to the assigned supervisor. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Operates motorized heavy equipment at designated proficiency level involved in the construction and/or maintenance of roads, drainage projects, utilities infrastructure and other construction projects. Utilizes various heavy equipment and performs manual labor on transportation, drainage and/or utilities projects: pouring and forming concrete, installing drainage related projects including but not limited to pipes in lots and canals and under streets, lowering and raising drainage culverts, machine cleaning drainage swales, laying sod, maintenance and construction of water and wastewater lines or digging and covering trenches, patching roads and sidewalks, installing culverts, etc. Mows fields and/or canal areas. Receives instruction and trains in use of various equipment, as time and workload permits. Inspects drainage or utilities construction projects to ensure compliance to project specifications; reviews work performed and reviews complaints or concerns from citizens concerning drainage or utilities projects. Inspects work areas prior to beginning work, and ensures safety of work sites and practices. Maintains logs and records of maintenance and repair work performed. Completes and signs work orders for completed assignments. Performs data entry to input pertinent information into the Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Performs routine maintenance to include the daily cleaning of the truck and all equipment. Performs minor maintenance and related care of equipment. Responsible for directing traffic around construction sites and ensuring proper signage is displayed. Must be prepared to assist drivers and pedestrians with route directions when asked. Responds to citizen and staff complaints and other concerns that involve any of the functions described herein. Uses courtesy and tact when dealing with the public and employees. When assigned to Utilities: Performs skilled work installing, maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and associated fixtures. Work involves installing water and sewer lines, mains, valves, hydrants and meters; and maintaining and repairing such fixtures. Employee is also responsible for inspecting water and sewer lines, including searching for leaks and measuring flow; and locating lines and fixtures for contractors, other utility companies, other City personnel, etc. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS May be assigned to shift work. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be required to respond to after hour calls. May be required to work with and for other divisions and departments within the organization. May be required to operate a dump truck, flat bed or transport material and/or equipment with heavy duty trailer. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Posting Information SUMMARY/PURPOSE To perform a variety of skilled tasks in road construction, equipment operation, routine maintenance, and/or repair of City streets. The work involves performing manual tasks using a wide array of hand, power tools and the operation of construction equipment; duties may be performed under adverse weather or working conditions. Perform detailed pre-operation checks on vehicles and equipment prior to use and document findings. 3. Perform routine operator level maintenance as assigned and emergency repairs if necessary. 4. Perform tasks related to Street Maintenance, such as but not limited to snow plowing/removal, sanding/salting roadways; constructing, grading, patching roadways; street sweeping operations; maintaining ditches, storm drains, natural water courses; loading, hauling, and stockpiling sand, gravel, brush, and other materials. 5. Maintain a safe work area by setting up appropriate barricades, warning devices, and proper vehicle and equipment placement. 6. Lead work crews as assigned. 7. Maintain records of work performed both in written and digital formats, as required. 8. Maintain clean and safe common areas for employees to use on a regular basis. 9. License Requirements A. Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class A commercial driver's license or privilege with tanker endorsement. Selection Process Information Education/Experience Review (25% of scoring process; 70 pass point): Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be rated based on the type (relatedness) and extent of their education and experience as documented on their application and/or supplemental questionnaire. Performance Exam (75% of scoring process; 70 pass point): The top scoring applicants from the Education/Experience Review will be invited to participate in the Performance Exam. In addition, applicants eligible for veteran's preference who pass the Education/Experience Review will move forward to the Performance Exam. Base Pay: $20.86 Hourly . SUMMARY: Operates large and valuable equipment. Operates various types of heavy equipment engaged in construction, repair, or maintenance of roads and beaches. Required to attend annual sea turtle monitoring certification class and comply with the beach maintenance permit. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and other irregular hours. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Serves as primary operator of heavy gasoline and/or diesel equipment, such as a maintainer or a gradall, engaged in beach maintenance and operations or complex construction and repair work. Operates other equipment used in beach construction, maintenance, and repair, such as front-end loaders, tractor-mowers, trucks, street sweepers, backhoes and rollers. Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc., and makes appropriate adjustments to be sure vehicle or equipment is in proper operating condition before leaving for job site. Performs minor repairs and cleaning of equipment. Works on roadways or beaches with minor supervision, incorporating stabilization and base requirements to produce a finished product. Patches roads with asphalt and caliche. May perform manual labor on occasion, including patching roads, cutting brush and picking up brush and debris on roads. Performs such other duties as may be assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Depending on assignment, may supervise and/or direct the work of a crew on an intermittent basis.
