Federation Early Learning Services company history timeline
Fox Valley United Way’s history began in 1922 with the founding of the Aurora Social Service Federation.
1952: “Preschool of the Fort Worth Jewish Community” opens with 6 students, Monday through Friday.
1953: Preschool enrolls 14 students, ages 3 to 5 years.
1954: School expands to 3 rooms.
1956: Preschool called “finest in Fort Worth” by TCU’s Child Psychology Department.
1962: Preschool comes under the direction of the newly formed board of proposed Dan Danciger Jewish Community Center (DDJCC). The budget for the 9-month school year is $5,374.
1964: DDJCC opens building on Granbury Rd. with a wing designed for preschool of 40 students.
1965: DDJCC Preschool has 43 pupils, a waiting list, and staff of four.
The burgeoning demand for child care, with Federation support, led to the opening of the Samuel Paley Day Care Center in 1966.
The organization incorporated the United Way name and community tenets in 1972 and was renamed the United Way of the Aurora Area.
1973: DDJCC adds a new wing and enlarges preschool.
Continuing our dedication to serving the most vulnerable populations, in 1975 an early intervention program was developed with seed money from the William Penn Foundation.
Recognizing a growing need, in the 1980’s FDCS expanded into Montgomery County, Delaware County and Center City Philadelphia.
1982: Preschool renamed “Lil Goldman Early Childhood Learning Center.”
1988: Enrollment grows to 100 children, ages 18 months to 5 years.
The 2000’s saw FDCS broadening its connections in the Jewish community by establishing partnerships with synagogues and serving the Orthodox community by opening the Gan Simcha program at the Gutman Early Learning Center in Melrose Park and the Paley Early Learning Center in NE Philadelphia .
2001: School again renamed in Lil Goldman’s honor.
In 2003, FDCS changed its name to Federation Early Learning Services (FELS) to stress our organization’s commitment to providing quality early childhood education.
The name was changed in 2004 to Fox Valley United Way following the merger with the United Funds of Yorkville and Plano.
In 2018, Fox Valley United Way made the decision to change from a multi-issue focus to a single-issue focus on early childhood.
