What began in 1979 as a clearinghouse for national food donations is now the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization—a powerful and efficient network of 200 food banks across the country.
In July 1982, the Connecticut Food Bank began distributing food to 70 agencies throughout Connecticut from a 2,000 square-foot warehouse in New Haven at the corner of Ferry and Water Streets.
The same happened in France, where the comedian Coluche started the "restos du coeur" (restaurants with a heart) in 1985.
